Have you ever sat in on a session at school nursery? How were the kids disciplined? And what for?

I was very a bit suprised at the frequently raised voices, snapping, tutting at DD1s potential nursery (attached to school) at our try out session yesterday. Am I being a wimp? She is 3.4, most children are nearer 4 I think.

I cover for a Nursery teacher once a week and I have to say its pretty easy going.

We like to encourage 'good' sitting , listening, etc but its how you correct it that counts.

For something nasty like hitting we use our 'cross' voice. That normally puts a cat amongst the pigeons.

Teachers do have a special teacher voice that they use and yes it can be quite loud, but it shouldn't be negative.

I used to help out at my dc's nursery and never heard anyone tutting or snapping. Sometimes a raised voice, but not in anger iyswim. I don't like the sound of it.

The behaviours attracting this attention were fiddling with things and fidgeting during carpet time, not getting to carpet time quick enough and putting sand toys back in the wrong place . Also, one little boy who appears to my uneducated eye to have learning difficulties (I have met him at other groups) and/ or no English wet himself twice in an hour and the teacher was quite nasty about it. The teaching assistant changed him both times in a really sensitive way and the first time it was almost like she was trying to make sure the teacher didn't notice .

I would recommend looking at a few more, to get something to compare. I would agree with Mrsmaidamess.

Oh dear. Can you look elsewhere?

I have seen others but not stayed for longer than a few minutes. I won't send her, but am a bit gutted. Also, it is the default option for two close friends and I don't know what to say. I only have another option because we are practising catholics.
