Do anyone else's DCs do golf in PE lessons?

Ours is an ordinary comp and this seems to be new. I am thinking this isn't a particularly active choice; it's usually hockey/football/netball/tag rugby/cross country on rotation at this time of year

our primary school did it for a term because a golf professional coach had offered to come in to teach the children.

Whilst it is not a traditional PE activity there wasn't room to do the standard/normal PE lessons and golf.

The children loved it and persuaded the coach to set up an after school golf club.

I think it's great when schools are offering different options for PE. Some do dance of various forms or sailing/canoeing. I think it is well accepted that the traditional thing of hockey/football/rugby/cross country isn't going to suit everyone, and for some people may put them off 'sport' for life.

Golf is not massively active, but it is physical, it's out in the fresh air rather than sat in front of the computer or TV, and if - as a result - students take it up as a hobby it's got to be good for them.

I did golf at school, it was great, we used to go for 9 holes with our teacher which was knackering, all that walking.
Although I still firmly believe it ios not a sport and is also quite pointless!

My boys can pick it for Games if they want to (mine don't). The school has a really good golf team, and they are willing to offer a golf scholarship if the right candidate comes along.

Blimey, I had no idea. When I questioned my DD about it, she said "It's alright, after we'd hit the balls we had to run and get them."

My DD's senior school took all the girls who don't show enthusiasm for traditional PE sports to a leisure centre to try dance, ice skating, climbing, badminton, cheerleading, rowing, trampolining, body combat and others that I can?t remember. It was about showing the girls what different sports were available.

Lizzylou · 06/01/2009 20:58

We did trampolining at school, it was great.

Golf is just so boring whoever said a "good walk spoilt" was right (but I am crap at all games like this, am even crap at golf on the wii).
Agree though, at least children are getting a choice and some different sports to try, not all children are into netball/hockey/rugby/football type sports.

Yes golf seems a bit too much like darts or snooker, slightly dangerous for children and not particularly strenuous

At least darts would incorporate numeracy I suppose

In what way is golf in school dangerous for children ????

cece · 06/01/2009 21:22

I did it when I was at secondary school and that was 23 years ago! We used to go to the local golf course once we had done a term of practising our shots on the school field. The only downside was the male PE teacher who used to do the classic help pose with us girls and then look down our tops

Kbear · 06/01/2009 21:27

DS did tri-golf (whatever that is) in infant school. It's good to a have a taste of all sports I think although golf not particularly aerobic!

modernart · 06/01/2009 21:39

Ermm... big metal sticks and small hard missiles?

OP posts:
modernart · 06/01/2009 21:40

You could actually kill someone with a golf club

OP posts:
Kbear · 06/01/2009 21:42

But they do javelin and shot put and hockey - oww, my ankles are wincing in pain at the memory of hockey sticks!

modernart · 06/01/2009 22:11

I think they don't do javelin or shot put with the proper implements here, just baby safety versions

They do hockey but are very strict on gumshields and shinpads

Kbear · 06/01/2009 22:16

Ah, see in my day, we were rock hard and used proper sharp metal pointy javelins, very heavy, toe-breakingly heavy shot puts and great big wooden hockey sticks with a rock hard hockey ball.

It was the 80's we didn't believe in health and safety (or have any fashion sense but that's another thread!).

modernart · 06/01/2009 22:46

me too kbear, obviously from the same era

Didn't see you were talking bout a comp, I was thinking primary and the one i work at uses little plastic clubs and balls, pretty inoffensive really!

I'm from the same ers as you guys, by the sounds of it. Remember my beowulf of a PE teacher whacking a proper hard hockey ball against my knee from a very short distance then sending me off for swearing!!! Still have a lump on my knee 25 years later!

overweightnoverdrawn · 07/01/2009 17:46

They do this at my ds school in primary . plastic clubs and plastic balls . Eight oclock on a monday morning befor school . but he loves it . lol

modernart · 07/01/2009 20:15

Ouch, ladymariner! PE teachers were sadists back in the day. I was always terrified of mine
