School uniform: how do you ensure children are dressed warmly enough in this freezing weather?

Just curious, really. Our school has a dress code rather than a uniform, so it is flexible enough to adapt to the seasons/temperature. I've always been a bit that two outfits per year (summer/winter) will be appropriate for all weathers. I remember literally freezing in primary school.

bluejelly - DDs school just has a formal uniform, that is all. They have actually recently talked to the girls about the uniform and some changes are bing made, to be changed over to entirely ina couple of ears with a gradual phasing in starting now. The girls have all still gone for skirts (juniors) or pinafores (infants) and dresses (summer). It looks very smart. We also knew about the uniform whn we chose the school - so obviously it wasn't a problem. DD would always chose skirts/dresses anyway.

But then I have no problem with uniform. Lots of adults have very specific unfirma after all.

I never understand the warmth issue though. IMO skirts and thick tights are warmer than trousers. I chose to dress in skirts, as I said, in winter as it is warmer.

My dd looks v smart in her school trousers, thanks very much

Seriously I just don't get it

Schools are warm. You just need to make sure they have a good coat and gloves, and some warm boots for walking to and from and for playtimes.

Hulababy · 07/01/2009 22:37

Each to ther own.

My DD would argue she doesn't see why anyone would prefer to wear school trousers.

No reason why she shouldn't have the option of skirt & tights, Hulababy.

I'd prefer my dds to be able to wear nice, warm, practical trousers, though.

Ds is wearing vest, polo shirt, school sweatshirt, and in worried parent fashion, we've added school fleece jacket as well. He says he's not too hot, but he is the only one in class with two tops .

Puffa for outside and hat.

is so so odd to think that some schools 'don't allow' girls to wear trousers. Terribly antiquated I think.

dd hasn't ever WORN school trousers, prefers pinafores and skirts, but that's not the point.

Dottoressa · 07/01/2009 23:23

Oh, i don't know. I tend to think that if a school has a uniform, then it has a uniform - and once you get children wearing bits of this and bits of that (some girls in trousers, some in skirts, some in pinafores and so on), it isn't really a uniform any more. Personally, I prefer all children to be in the same uniform at school - though I know others would feel differently!

TheFallenMadonna · 07/01/2009 23:33

DD left her cardigan on her peg at school today apparently. She certainly didn't take it to after school club with her. So clearly warm enough for her in school...

To and from she wears coat, hat, gloves, scarf. Not sure what else she'd wear if she wasn't in uniform.

Hulababy · 08/01/2009 16:54

ramonaquimby - it is a very traditional school TBH. But we like the uniform, DD likes the uniform - so it is fine. Completely happy for it to be strict. We have set coats, hats, the lot. So trousers are really not an issue for us!
