any experience anyone? (interested in it as a career option)

Not sure you could use it as a career option. We use BrainGym throughout the day in our school - especially before writing/handwriting in Year R and Reception. There's loads of good books about it, but it's something that's done in conjunction with everything else rather than as a thing in isolation. It's really just a version of physical therapy - lasy 8's, breathing exercises etc.

we had a thread on sn a while ago, maybe you were having baby? can't do link, using big keys! think it has some merits but practitioner i met made outlandish claims....

Well..... ROFL Christie I can just imagine. I can imagine them trying to get ds1 to do it as well (no chance! although I have a friend who does the exercises on her son in his sleep).

No well the reason I'm asking is because I'm doing the nutritional thing you know about, and training to be a homeopath and I'd like to specialise in stuff for children ith developmental disabilities (not necessarily serious- dyslexia etc as well) or children in general (getting children ready for learning etc) and I thought brain gym may be something to add in. Or alternatively the raviv method for dyslexia/dyspraxia although I can't find out much about that. (again I think good for mild SN/NT - but not good for SLD). I'm also doing Mini-IQ now (email me for more about that if you want- that could be an easy way out of the paper work - seriously- and I have someone you could talk to if you wanted to about that) and that again would kind of tie in. I have a friend who has just qualified as a reiki practitioner, had a child who had some problems but has done very well and she's done a bit of brain gym. We're just wondering aloud whether we can do anything with all these bits and pieces.

brain gym is a long old training process though- the Raviv method much faster- it's had a pilot study carried out at a primary school, but Im not sure what it is.

We have a wonderful "helper" (can't call her a tutor any more) who has a degree in Linguistics and she does some simple Brain Gym with DS. I find bits of paper with zig zags and things. I'm happy for her to do it and she knows him well so totally understands how to pitch it. I don't think they take a long time over it. Could be a nice complementary string to your bow but maybe not if the training takes ages.

Have been using Brain Gym and other similar physical exercises with ds (8 and dyslexic) since teaching him at home. Definite improvement in his reading after doin g crossing midline exs. Fav at the moment standing on one leg and catching balls across the midline. From an earlier Dennison book I think. Mind you, reading also improves after 10 mins on play station..... I know it's used in his school which he'll be going back to in May. I personally would love to find him a dyslexia tutor open to new/fun ideas. Many I've seen seem to be nice, retired teacher types. I'm sure they are great but I don't think would click with ds.

Jimjams I hadn't heard of Raviv method till I looked it up after seeing your thread a few days ago. I agree it looks really interesting and perhaps more specifically aimed at dyslexics. From the reading I've done (and I think I've at least skimmed every book with dyslexia in the title since ds'sdiagnosis!) it seems to make sense to me. Will try to find out more when back in UK.
