An Apple For The Teacher???

There was a news report on the Scottish news earlier this evening on the presents that teachers receive at this time of year from pupils. When I was a pupil, I don't remember buying a present for any of my teachers but now that I am a teacher, I do get the occasional bottle of wine/box of chocs etc.

The news report indicated that in some circumstances, the presents teachers are receiving are growing more expensive and inappropriate. Suggestions given were jewellery and in one example - lingerie!

What are your thoughts on presents for teachers - should this practice continue and if so, what constitutes a reasonable present? If you are a teacher, do you object to presents from pupils? What is the most unusual present you have ever been given?

oh little - i agree absolutely about your worst and best pressies - i hate cats too (as well as all animal/cutesy based ornaments)

I think teachers get paid to do a job. I don't see why they should get a year's supply of free chocolate and wine twice a year as well. (Ducks for cover.)

I hate feeling obliged to give a gift. This year, I gave a donation to Oxfam instead. And DS made a card.

Sorry teachers!

I have a shelf in the music room for ornaments I have been given, and they do have a habit of disappearing when the child leaves.

Subtlemouse - don't feel obliged all. As a teacher, in a class of about 30, maybe four or five pupils would give a present - most would give a card. There will be loads of pupils who don't give presents so you'll be in the majority.

As much as I show my appreciation to the children who give me presents, I really don't want to be overloaded with wine and chocs. I much prefer something that reflects the personality of the child - perhaps something homemade that has had a lot of thought put into it.
