Help playing violin

5 replies

spades123 · 18/11/2008 23:30

My DD1 age 9 has her grade 1 violin exam in early December. She has a weekly lesson & practices about 4 or 5 nights a week.
She is struggling with scales & arpeggios (arpeggios particularly). Does anybody know of a website (or anything else) that will help me work out how she should be playing particular notes (when she can't remember the finger placing, for example).

TIA

DS1 is doing his Grade 1 at the beginning of December. The arpeggios are;

D major - D (open string), F# (2nd finger on D string), A (open string), D (3rd finger on A string) then back down.

A major - A (open string), C# (2nd finger on A string), E (open string), A (3rd finger on E string) then back down

G major - this is the tricky one as it is 2 octaves
G (open string), B (2nd finger on G string), D (open string), G (3rd finger on D string), B (1st finger on A string), D (3rd finger on A string), G (low 2nd finger on E string) then back down.

Hope it is helpful - also get her to remember that when you play 3rd finger, you put 1st and 2nd down as well, which helps keep your hand in the right position. So you play 1st finger, or 1st and 2nd fingers, or 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Yes, it has been very helpful. She is doing much better on the arpeggios. I have just shown her your comments about the 3rd finger & she tells me she knows it! but thanks for thinking of us. Good luck!

Does she have no scale book or does the teacher not write the scales and necessary fingerings down? All major exam boards publish scale books that don´t cost an arm and a leg. If the teacher enters her for an exam she or he should teach the scales properly, i.e. write fingerings in the music (can later be rubbed out when pupil progresses). I am both mum and violin teacher so if you have any further questions do post again.
