DS (6) is left handed and is struggling when writing as he cant leave a finger space between his words like his right handed peers, I have been told of a word spacer that will help any ideas?

I don't know about a word spacer, but have a look at Anything Left-Handed. Lots of info there.

My dd is left handed and also struggled with her writing at first.

My DS is 6 also and I have just bought him a Stabilo blue left handed pencil from anythinglefthanded.com and it ROCKS! He loves it and his writing is easier and better, I also bought the first work book of left handed writing skills, which says that instead of leaving a finger space get them to write an imaginary 'O' between each word, this works for my DS. DS teacher is left handed and said to try anything to see it it helps, some left handers need all the props and others manage without. The books has also loads of other tips we are trying and there is also a good video on the website with ideas too. Good luck with it, it is hard, DS struggles, but he is getting much better.

If you take a look at the anythinglefthanded web site there is a great video you can watch on there about how best to help children write left handed - paper position, correct grip etc. I have found it very useful for my DD.

All those with left-handed kids, when did you know they were left-handed. Have 2 yo who doesn't seem to be sure which hand to use.

GentleOtter · 14/11/2008 23:31

I discovered ds1 was left handed quite early on (when he started to feed himself or carry things)

Good things from anything lefthanded are - scissors, saws (when they are older) and a proper writing pen with a left sided nib. It helps with their handwriting.

We took ages with teaching tying shoelaces but we did it using a mirror eventually.

WobblyPig · 14/11/2008 23:37

Ds seems to switch between the two but seems to do things with the left hand that I would ind, as a right-handed person, awkward. i thought handedness developed in the second year but my son is over 2. Any thoughts?

GentleOtter · 14/11/2008 23:54

I cannot remember how old ds was but it was probably around two to three ish.

I found this as it never dawned on me all the things taken for granted as a 'righty'.

purplepassion · 18/11/2008 12:04

My ds showed signs of being left handed from being very young less than a year but I know that it varies from child to child, but is ususally becoming obvious by 2.6yrs according to child development books!

dd2 is left handed due to brain damage so has always been left handed lol. ds1 still swops occasionally and he is nearly 7 - the closest i have ever seen to ambidextrous. we find the stabilo pens/ pencils good. is it 's'move easy'?...

christywhisty · 18/11/2008 14:32

My DD was definitely left handed at 2 as she badly burnt her left hand, so it was bandaged and in a cast for about 6 weeks. She did use her right hand during that time but as soon as the bandages came off she went back to lefthanded.

lljkk · 18/11/2008 21:48

DS (4+5m) eats right handed, but usually writes left-handed. He's all over the shop, really, as sometimes he swaps his pen and writes right-handed. If he tries to draw something in the air he uses both hands together. I think he may turn out to be ambidextrous as an adult.

ThingOne · 18/11/2008 21:56

We were pretty clear DS1 was lefthanded from the moment he started to scribble. When's that? 10 months? 18 months? Can't remember now but it was clear. At some stages he has used his right hand as well but not for writing/drawing.

Now in first term of reception.

Thanks for links - we need to get some stuff for him soon.
