.....for under £400? If so where? I'm presuming the "from China" ones on ebay aren't worth buying - am I right?

Buy second hand - look in local paper or Friday-Ad type thing etc, they always have a musical instruments section. There are some bargains around.

That's how I got mine when I left school (had had a school saxophone up till then), ended up getting a really decent one, and the guy I bought it from had played in jazz bands for a few years and really looked after it and bought loads of extras. Was about £400 but mind you that's about 15 years ago now .

My parents probably would have bought new if I'd really wanted but the budget was set and I would have ended up with a cheaper brand and probably a saxophone that wasn't as good. Anyway the school one I'd been playing was about as second-hand as you could get!

this one is a great sax. It is currently £495 but if your child is at a state school you can order it through them VAT-free, bringing the price down to £421.28.

This site is great for service too - they usually deliver to the school the day after it is ordered!
