V.Angry - 9yr olds playing rugby for 1 hour in sleet!

My DS was the last out of school the other day, because his hands were so cold he couldn't get dressed. At lunchtime they were sent indoors as too cold to be out (with coats, hats, gloves etc). After lunch they had a visiting Rugby teacher, so could not cancel and they had to stay out in sleet/snow for 1 hour! He said some kids were crying & he felt sick. Some only had shorts on! When we got home I could wring his trousers and socks out, and top wasn't much better. He had been warned to bring a tracksuit but not all kids remembered. Some wore gym pumps on soggy field! Hardly any had spare socks and came out of school with bare feet in shoes.
Is this cruelty? Would you complain?

I remember playing hockey in the freezing cold (in a short pleated navy skirt and navy Big Pants, obviously). Still shiver at the memory. At least we could wear jumpers - the boys had to play in long-sleeved PE tops but no extra layers. Go on, complain, or at least check it out - horrid.

That kind of weather is worse than almost anything. It's being cold and wet that's so bad. If it's snowing and staying snow (eg skiing weather), it's just not so bad because you stay drier. I grew up in the midwest of the US, where my school was regularly closed in the winter because of snow. And, although I'm ashamed to admit this given my current, erm, state, I did cross country running for about 10 years through all sorts of weather when I was little. Cold is fine. Cold and wet is evil.

I'm talking about UK weather here, not the really cold stuff which makes your nose hair freeze the instant you breathe in.

Yes i would complain.

Dd1 is most unimpressed with her school at the mo as they have been told that they have 5 weeks of football trianing starting next week. Her exact words were "I don't do football"

I am most unimpressed because they want me to buy her a tracksuit for it.

My ds is also 9 and belongs to a local football club. They train twice a week and play every Saturday. They play and train in sleet, snow, hail, freezing cold. Very few players and none of the trainers ever cry off because of horrible weather but this is a voluntary activity, after school and at weekends. If I were in your position, I don't know what I would do to be honest. I have been in a situation where about 5 of the kids in my son's team were crying with cold during a match (blizzard!). Character building? Maybe but only in hindsight

My 6 yr old DS does football club at school and they have played in snow and rain all through the winter. Its a state school but outdoor things are only very rarely cancelled for bad weather. they definately subscribe to the 'character building' school of thought.

Last week, however, when it was heavy sleet the coach did something inside with them instead. I always stay to watch but was astounded when some of the other mums turned up and were obviously annoyed that the children hadnt been outside playing a match. They had a real go at the coach.

It really was freezing!! Fine for them - they'd all been sat at home in the warmth!!!
