Any Yr9 Parents - choosing GCSE options now?

My DD wants to choose History, French, Geography & German as her 4 options, but thinks they might make her do 1 arty subject. Anyone else doing the choices?
(Seems not much choice compared to our day - so many compulsory subjects now.)

Modular can be (with Edexcel) at foundation level (grades G to C) of higher (e to A). Advice I would give her is to work very* hard on her course work.....these are marks in the bank before she even sits the exams at the end of Y11. She also needs to revise well for her modular exams....these are also marks in the bank and sometimes kids don't take them seriously.

Books would be OK from last year for Edexcel, can't say for other boards.

Milliways, with 7s in science she would probably be fine with the separate sciences. The last two modues in each are the 'extras' that they sit that give them 3 GCSEs rather than 2. There are no real differences in the structure of the exams, the last two modules in each are just more demanding and rather more 'abstract'. For example in Biology GCSE you do the basics of protein synthesis

yes, CGP, major brain fart on my part! Blame it on my teaching Y9 last lesson!

He is at 6th form, lil, doing Eng Lit, Politics, History and Sociology - liking it all so far (to the extent that he doesn't want to drop any of them, but has to drop one) but as usual his classroom performance is better than his homework!

What does DD want to do next year?

Potty1 · 10/02/2005 17:11

JanH, he sounds like my ds, I'm hoping his classroom performance is up to scratch because I don't see him doing much homework at all!

DS1 is a very talkative and opinionated boy, Potty - he used to get into trouble for it at lower school, but at A level he "makes a lively contribution to class discussions" (they had a report at Christmas - so far so good - parents' evening next month!)

Same child - different outlook Jan. College is suiting my ds much better than school ever did. Just hoping it shows in his results.

Dd wants to go to Beauty college and become a beautician with the long term plan of working on cruise ships!

milliways · 10/02/2005 23:16

How old is she Lilibet - Mine told a church leader she wanted to be a Celebrity It Girl

she is 16, taking her GCSE's this time. The college near us that does this course is amazing, but she needs a C in science and at the moment that isn't looking likely.

milliways · 10/02/2005 23:23

Oh, I hope she finds a revision book that helps. Having a required grade must be a good motivator. Does her school do revision clubs/workshops or does she have a friend who can help. My DD did a revision session with her friend who always fails language tests (DD's best subject) & friend got an A. Friend then helps her with other subjects.

How old is your dd?

Ah yes, just seen she is just taking her options! Dd doesn't do any 'arty' subjects but had to take one tech subject - she chose textiles and has quite enjoyed it.

JanH · 10/02/2005 23:28

Definitely try the CGP books, lil. And the BBC bite size. DS1 did both and he thinks they pulled him up.

Also agree with milliways, revising in pairs can be very helpful (as long as they concentrate )

What else does she need - apart from the C in science? If they're impressed with her otherwise they might stretch a point (unis do after all!)

Wish her luck anyway

happymerryberries, thanks for explaining. If only the school had put it in those terms
