Each department lays on an activity for the children not going on trips. We are linking art and RE, any ideas?

Oh right it doesn't look like that now, cardboard boxes everywhere and abandoned pizza boxes in the kitchen!

Does it have to be drawings? I used to make my classes do story boards of a rite of passage, and then when they had planned out the pictures, I lent them props and they took photographs on the school digital camera - which we then uploaded and students made a sort of diary type thing. I used to do it with Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Groups of 6. RE is obvious, and the art comes in the drawing / planning out of the storyboards and the design of the photos.

Another fun idea is for the students to 'design their own religion' and make a poster for it (for the art bit!). So we'd start off thinking about the different elements of a religion such as a set of beliefs, religious leader, place of worship, holy book etc... and then think about a random thing that their religion could be based on (Boys usually chose football clubs, girls popstars and the like...) then they have to make a poster advertising their 'religion' and you could get some students (who want to ) to present it to the rest of the class? Perhaps a prize for the winning entry?). I usually do it as a fun end of term activity and introduce it as my own religion dedicated to me...

God... Mrs Elkat
Place of worship... My classroom
Holy Book ...My mark book
Special festivals... My birthday. All students must bring me chocolates, bow at my feet and recite.... or whatever,

Students used to find my religion dedicated to me hilarious, especially when I made up bizarre rituals!

Wikipedia is my resource of choice for everything first these days, as they have links to really high resolution copies of the pictures you need. Just did a whole July 4th wall full of pictures for my youngests class.

I was going to suggest a project on religious art in modern day settings, how each faith is still using traditional art methods.

I have a fantastic 'Encyclopedia of the Gods' but a little tough to scan all 1000 odd of them.

And Elkat, that is so cool

Design your own manadala - or use coloured sand to do one? Create your own Zen garden?

If you do mandalas you can get maths link in there too, with the use of pairs of compasses and measuring?

Just looked up mandalas, and they look like excellent fun to create.
