when did the shirt signing thing start?

this morning got to school with my year 4 dd who goes up to middle school in september. discovered she should have brought in a plain shirt so everyone in the class could sign it! so I duly went back in with one (perfctly good, hoping it would last out another school year) and there they all were, excitedly wrecking each other's clothes with the teachers helping!! Astonoshing! So when did this 'tradition' start happening? (I'm guessing when proms and limos came into being) I am 50 (gulp) and we never did this

We did this in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994.

ChocChocPorridge · 22/07/2016 08:06

30 years ago we did it when we left primary school - wasn't encouraged or discouraged by staff though - and certainly would have been stomped on if other years did it!

Heyheyheygoodbye · 22/07/2016 08:09

We did it after GCSEs in 97 because there was no uniform in sixth form. Don't think I kept it though! I'm a ruthless thrower-outer of sentimental stuff Grin

I think the whole "goodbye" thing is ridiculously over the top.

We signed books in 1990 in Dorset. I suspect this is partly because we didn't have a uniform as such in the 6th form - you could wear what you liked, as long as it was suitable for a workplace and in the school colours.

P1nkP0ppy · 24/07/2016 16:41

We did our school summer dresses. Mine was 1972 and certainly this was a school custom in 1960.

FeckinCrutches · 24/07/2016 16:43

How did you leave secondary school in 1976 if you are 50? Confused

Hulababy · 24/07/2016 16:43

Was a thing when I left secondary school - so late 80s. I'm sure it was a thing for leaving middle school too - so mid 80s.

Definitely not new

imwithspud · 24/07/2016 16:47

I am 25 and this was definitely a thing when I left year 6.

TheNaze73 · 24/07/2016 16:49

We did it in the mid 80's

BendydickCuminsnatch · 24/07/2016 16:49

Yep we did this at GCSEs 10 years ago, and leaving middle school 13 years ago.

Sirzy · 24/07/2016 16:50

We did it when I left primary school in 95, secondary school we all had a leavers book we signed for each other instead

heron98 · 26/07/2016 16:25

I left primary school in 1992 and we did it then! I think I still have mine in my mum's loft.

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2016 16:26

We did it post O Levels, 1987

I have 2 still one from 1990 and one from 1995.

notamummy10 · 26/07/2016 16:29

I did it in 2004 when I left primary school and 2009 when I left secondary school!!

Pengweng · 26/07/2016 18:43

We only did it when leaving primary school and then after GCSE's and A Levels. Not at the end of each year. It was also a thing to try and rip off as many front shirt pockets as possible. No idea why though Confused

NerrSnerr · 26/07/2016 18:44

We did it when we left primary and secondary in the 90s.

CharleyDavidson · 26/07/2016 18:45

I left primary in 85 and we didn't do it then. but did do it at secondary when I left in 90 (then went straight back to the same place to do my A levels).

CaroleService · 26/07/2016 18:47

I am nearly 54 and girls in my elder sister's year did it.

Rubixx · 26/07/2016 18:54

We did this - 2000.

ProfYaffle · 26/07/2016 18:58

We did it every year from 1983 to 1988!

Fomalhaut · 26/07/2016 18:58

I'm (cough cough splutter) years old and left school early nineties. Some did this then

(I didn't, I'd have been in serious trouble ruining a shirt!)
