How much gets spent per child a year in state school..compared to the fees of private?

My school handbook gives the cost per year per child in scotland as being £3241 for the year 2006-2007 (for primary school)

so about a quarter of private fees then, ok.. ta

It also varies between different authorities. For example, schools in worcestershire receive about £300.00 per pupil, per year less than schools in Birmingham. It makes a huge difference when you're talking about a school of 200 pupils - about 2 teachers' worth!

My son's independent school is a charity not a profit making business. (Hence all the recent news about schools being threatened with losing their charitable status.)

Most independent schools are non-profit making charities. Their overheads are generally higher per pupil (specialist staff and facilities, higher ratio staff to pupil, often owning the property with responsibility for its maintenance and development) some of which would be funded separately in a state school by LEA to the per capita amount.

It also varies between schools in the same area. The formula for funding for each state school is quite complicated. It does mean a school down the road can get quite a lot more than another one though.

Fees at DD's school range from about 6k per year at age 3-4, to 12k per year in the sixth form.

Their turnover last time I looked at charities commission website was £12m; their surplus was 300k iirc.

The school is non-profit-making so any surplus is carried forward to be used for the benefit of the school in the future. Lots of improvements going on at the moment re dining hall, new science block planned, expansion of junior so not at all worried about surplus.

We have a fantastic bursar who keeps a good holdo n the purse strings.

Where we live each state primary pupil costs 4500 a year on average.
