Any KS1 teachers to give me some advice?

Got Ds's report at the weekend. for the last year I have had an ongoing 'discussion' with his teacher regarding the level of his work - I think he is not achieving because of his suspected dyspraxia/APD/AS? (to be diagnosed), she says his only problem is laziness. The report surprised me because Reading and writing got a relatively high mark - both 1a. He is currently reading Biff and Chip at Stage 6 and his writing is barely legible when we can get him to do anything at all. Can any Y2 teacher give me some idea what sort of levels these are (ie are they 1a or more like 1c?) and whether I need to go back to her again?! Thank you

If he's Year 2 the aim is for a 2 a-c. So a 1 is below the average attainment here.

Thanks LIZS. He is behind I know, what I am worried about is that she has upped the grade to make it look like she is doing OK and I am being a pushy, interfering old busybody of a mother . He has his initial assessment today for the dyspraxia etc but she does not seem to be recognising that there may be a problem. My instinct is that she is trying to prove me wrong.
Do I sound paranoid?!

Frequently ks1 teachers have to massage the grades so they achieve their own targets but not so much as they give too many level 3 at the end of year 2 as it doesn't look to good on the value added at the end of year 6 where there is a ceiling at level 5 even for the most genius, mature and hard working children

My ds is 7 and in year 2, he has just gone on to ort level 6 and his writing isn't that great. His teacher told me a few weeks ago that he was level 1a for these. I would think it was the correct level for him.

They are supposed to go up two levels a year. So an average child should be on 2b at the end of Yr2, therefore that average child would have been at 1a at the end of Yr 1.

A level 6 book and only-just-legible handwriting for a boy at the end of Yr 1 would probably be about right- so i would say yes the teacher is about right in her assessment of him

Perhaps she is making allowances for the suspected dyspraxia.

Thnaks titchy, but he is end of Yr2!

Just because it is not legible does not mean his writing is not a 1a. Have not got levels with me, but if he can write something and he can read it back to you (writing may need to be mediated by child to be understood is the phrase)he is 1a.

Again with reading, if he can recognise some words knows to read left to right, look at pages in order,is able to discuss why he likes a book (that is read with him) he will get a 1a.

This is from memory, which to be honest after sats, ofsted, report writing, 3 loopy children of my own, is not great.

Yes I know but you said you thought he was struggling a bit - so his assessment of 1a would confirm that the teacher agrees. It might be worth asking the school what action they will put in place to enable him to catch up.

Sorry Titchy, I see what you mean. Are you a teacher? With this and his dx of dyspraxia yesterday, should I be asking for an IEP or is that a bit much at this stage?
