My children are smart but i notice they are only acessing about 70% of wjat the teacher says, if that. They zone out etc.
I do need to supplement teaching so there are no gaps.
we have a month off on summer holidays and i have a good english teacher that will do daily lessons.
i cant find a maths teacher.
Can anyone recommend an online summer school or a tutor?
We are based in uk and both my children are in secondary school.
We will look to do daily lessons.

Do they take medication in school?

outreachone2 · 23/07/2026 07:14

No they dont.
They tried many doses and types and nothing really helped them without awful side effects.

My only concern with adhd is that you don’t want to turn them off learning. So it needs to be purposeful and fun.

re maths there are a lot of good online courses now/ apps etc . Daily practise of basics might enough to help. I’m primary though or I’d suggest one; it may be worth asking the English tutor if she knows of any

do they take a decent quality multivitamin and omega 3? There does seem to be some emerging evidence that this can help a little.

outreachone2 · 23/07/2026 07:23

Yes they do take all of these things, definitely helps.

If you know areas of weakness you could try the above or Oak National but I agree a personal tutor can be better.

there does seem to be some apps around.

Up to date CGP books can be very supportive

(Make sure they’re the most recent versions.)

I’d also keep a good routine around them; including some exercise or a walk in the morning, after lunch and near dinner. Or skipping, hopscotch, some sort of self devised circuits that they enjoy.

Second this!! Routine is key :)

@outreachone2 please feel free to PM me as we use an online tutor which might work for you x

Kids with ADHD need a break sometimes. I would worry about using their summer holidays to have teaching every day for a month. I wonder if it would be better to do this once a week over the long term rather than over the summer holidays?

Soontobe60 · 23/07/2026 09:39

How do you know they’re only accessing 70% of the teacher input? FWIW, as a teacher I can guarantee that throughout the school day the majority of children only focus on 70% of teacher input judging by the number of children whose first question to the teacher once they are supposed to be starting the task is ‘what do we do again Miss?’. Ask any teacher, they’ll tell you the same.
Having your DC do daily maths and English lessons during the summer holidays isnt going to go down well - plus it’s going to cost a fortune! Two tutors for 2 Dc 5 times a week would be the best part of £300.

Maths is mostly about knowing the basics concepts and being confident in them, recalling and calculating in your head.

I could understand complex maths at school like algebra for example that I could work out in written method but despite a lot of additional tutoring, extra support in school and 2 extra maths lessons a day could not grasp division and big number multiplication. I never grasped my times tables properly either, and it takes me ages to work out simple addition and subtraction in my head.

So do short little games, perhaps aimed at more simple maths methods rather than aiming for the stuff they'd be learning at school. If they are missing chunks from their lessons anyway, you will find they are missing the core understanding.

BBC Bite size has some great resources for all age groups.

Hi, we are traveling for a full month and they currently are both wanting routine. Although they enjoy their holiday they struggle with it too. They thrive off routine and enjoy learning. Its something they have asked for.

70% was generous! Id say 50. I have spoken to school and can tell when an adult talks to them or them keeping up with instructions.
They both really enjoy learning and know they cant focus in a class as well as 121.

Yes, we will also do over the week in term time but we literally have a whole month off after travelling for a month. Its seems like a good opportunity to do this.

You can find it in your 'private messages' but I will reach out to the tutor and PM you as soon as I hear back x

If the meds aren't working it's likely that they don't actually have ADHD.
It's basically speed.....I actually took one of my daughter's meds once
