Times Table - embarrassing question needs answering!

I think I know the answer, but what the hell is the 0 times table???? Apparantly dd will be learning the ), 1, 5, 2 and 10 times table next year and I really am not sure what the 0 table is!!!

Get the idea? Yo can't times something by 0 because you get 0.

Can I bore you all with the mysterious wonders of the 9 times table?

09 18 27 36 45 54 63 72 81 90

a) it's symmetrical and b) add together the 2 digits and it equals 9. I was dumbstruck when I discovered this .

AND you can do that 'thing' with your fingers for the 9 times table
put down 2nd finger for 2 x 9 and you get 1 + 8 fingers = 18 !
3rd finger = 2+7 fingers etc

My favourites:
12 = 3 X 4
and
56 = 7 X 8
all have consecutive numbers

theres a good trick with the 11 times table too...

11 x 44 = 484
11 x 23 = 253

etc...

add the two digits together and put in the middle, eg. 4+4 (for x 44) is 8 so the answer is 484.

if the total comes to more than 9, add the first digit to the first no, e.g. 11 x 66 = 726.

I guess they're just trying to get the point in about 0 times anything still being 0, right at the start of them learning this kind of stuff - 0 is such a hugely important concept in maths, and for some children quite a tricky one to get to grips with.

So, it's not more complicated than you thought, just that they make a bigger deal of it than you expected!

I do like these patterns.

Dd & I did the 12x table on the way to school - confidence much helped by seeing how the digits add up in a pattern of 3 - 6 - 9 - 3 - 6 - 9 etc.

so:

1 x 12 = 12; 1+2 = 3
2 x 12 = 24; 2+4 = 6
3 x 12 = 36; 3+6 = 9
4 x 12 = 48; 4+8 = 12; 1+2 = 3
5 x 12 = 60; 6+0 = 6
6 x 12 = 72; 7+2 = 9
7 x 12 = 84; 8+4 = 12; 1+2 = 3

and on.

Separate fun tip from ds: if you are trying to find out if a number is prime, (a) eliminate even numbers; (b) eliminate anything ending in 5; (c) add digits together, and if they add up to 3, 6 or 9 it is not prime.

Multiples of 9 - digits in the number must add up to 9 (18 = 1+8 = 9; etc)

Multiples of 3 - digits add up to 3, 6 or 9

Multiples of 2 - always end in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8

Oo, I like these. Some are new to me and I will try them out on dd.

Particularly grateful to FleurDelacour for the 7x8 one. I always have difficulty remembering the answer to that.

Some were new to me too - like the 9 x with fingers. That is what cmes from helping out at DD's school in the Y3 class. I help in the "magic maths" lesson where the teacher shows the children lots of little maths tricks. I am learning lots

Multiplying by zero is easy.
Dividing by zero is much more of a headache!!
