Delusional headteacher peddling the nonsense that putting up with a full uniform during the heatwave is somehow virtuous.

It is 2026, and we still have repressed, out of touch, delusional headteachers peddling the nonsense that putting up with a full uniform during a heatwave is somehow virtuous.

This genius wrote on the Spectator
https://spectator.com/article/why-the-heatwave-hysteria-wont-change-how-i-run-my-school/
(archived at https://archive.is/ZbswW )

Allowing PE kits to be worn on warm days risks setting a precedent. Will heads have to relax uniform requirements at every change in the weather? Such relaxations in standards affect the behaviour of students and the daily routines of the school day. [...]
By relaxing these standards, we run the risk of signalling to the community that we don’t care

Except there is no proof that uniforms are in any way linked to better behaviour nor to academic results. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

The Sutton Trust repeatedly explained as much, e.g. https://www.suttontrust.com/news-opinion/all-news-opinion/smaller-classes-uniforms-primary-homework-among-least-effective-ways-boosting-school-performance/

I am all for disciplines, rules and standards.
But there is a difference between logical rules, enforced for a well-substantiated reason, and capricious rules in place just because.

Not just that - here we are not even talking about abolishing uniform codes, but simply about wearing PE-approved school kit. What on Earth would be wrong with that?

The question is more serious than it may seem, because it links to some key points:

PS The choice of a questionable word like 'hysteria', with its misogynistic etymology, would require a separate discussion - but the readership of the Spectator, and the bootlickers who defend schools' capricious rules, are unlikely to grasp that.

Why the heatwave hysteria won’t change how I run my school

such hysteria leads to schools being forced into making operational decisions that have broader and longer-lasting effects.

Sorry I’ve only read the free paragraph.

The equivalent he’s describing would be asking sailors on the Atlantic Convoys to wear dress uniform only while slowly freezing to death. What a complete twat.

Given the Spectator’s reputation and debts, he’s probably been asked to write a piece of ragebait. Which has certainly worked in my case.

ParentOfOne · 25/06/2026 11:17

It wouldn't be a huge issue if this were just the ragebait of the Spectator, Daily Fail, etc. Unfortunately, unaccountable schools with stupid, capricious rules are a real issue. Otherwise we wouldn't have schools giving detention for cycling to schools, scandals like the Mossbourne one, etc.

I totally agree OP. I work at a large inner city comp and we have great attendance this week which I’m sure is partly related to head being relaxed with uniform, can wear PE kit or just shirt/trousers/shorts/skirt etc

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/06/2026 11:31

Read this yesterday. Guy is a grade A twat.

You’d think British kids would be the most resilient kids in the world if uniform was that important.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 25/06/2026 11:32

Ridiculous

our primary school yeah only wear trackies anyway no seperate pe kit

but the head says no uniform while it’s hot just wants the kids to be cool

i saw him at drop off and he himself is wearing shorts and tshirt very casual

I don’t understand this uniform nonsense

Desperatelydoomscrolling · 25/06/2026 13:16

Schools are nuts over uniform. My DD has a shoulder injury ATM that is really painful but is helped a little by wearing a support brace (it's like a thick neoprene half sleeve) not sure if it's a mental or physical support tbh but she really struggles without it. Now this under the thick black polo shirt in the heat was so uncomfortable and she was sweaty and getting a painful rash, so she took off the brace but was then feeling sore and found it hard to sit correctly so was still struggling. I asked if she could have a allowance to wear a thin loose black cotton t-shirt for a week (plain black like the uniform, I would have bought and dropped it off that day) to allow her to wear her brace in the hot weather and they said no, it has to be a logo'd polo shirt and I should 'just let her come home'. Shes ended up with two days absence just because they can't stand the idea of a girl not displaying the logo for one week in very hot conditions. Bonkers.

ParentOfOne · 25/06/2026 13:18

@Desperatelydoomscrolling Yes. Why, as a country, do we put up with this bs? Maybe for the same reasons we put up with a monarchy, with leasehold and will all the other things that seem bonkers to the rest of the world...

Well, all his staff will think he's a fuckwit, and now the country knows it too.

If your priority as a headteacher is your pupils looking smart over being able to actually learn anything then you have it massively, massively wrong.

Bincollextion · 25/06/2026 13:22

This is when parents need to take matters into their own hands as we know what’s best for our children.

justasking111 · 25/06/2026 13:26

In our county we've had three male head teachers arrested for child pornography and worse. One went totally nuts and was sectioned. Ours has been on compassionate leave for eight months because of bereavement.

Forgive me if I don't take uniform rules seriously.

JohnofWessex · 25/06/2026 13:28

I suggest that given the workload that many heads have they either go a bit mad or have to be mad to apply.

Sorry, differently sane

IrnBruAndDietCoke · 25/06/2026 13:30

It’s part of this cargo cult of thinking that if you dress up as something you become it. In this case the head thinks dressing up like a diligent student will make students more diligent. As a teacher at a school with no uniform, I know this is rubbish.

HobnobsChoice · 25/06/2026 13:30

"I carried 25kg of kit and wore uniform in Afghanistan so kids should wear school uniform too" is not a compelling arguement. Our children are not soldiers, they are in school, not a theatre of conflict and they're not under enemy fire.
I'd bet he was wearing technical wicking tops and trousers in camo not black polyester trousers. The British Army have multiple uniforms for different occasions, he wasn't wearing Full Dress or Number 1 or 2 dress. I'd guess he was in fact wearing combat uniform which is more breathable and moveable.

Normallyinthepool · 25/06/2026 13:31

Totally agree op.
I dont want unthinking automata for children

And we need to teach them how to adapt to heat

justasking111 · 25/06/2026 13:35

When we had heatwaves at school. Our teachers took us and our books outside and we sat under tree canopies.

I checked Google that land we sat on is now a housing estate and car park. Our playing Fields are no more.

As I had mentioned in my thread on Mossbourne Academy, there is another problem: roles where you exercise authority over other people might unfortunately attract the kind of individuals who get off on imposing petty rules on other people.

Police forces have psychological evaluations and other processes to try to filter out these individuals; granted, their process leaves much to be desired, but at least they recognised the problem.

Schools have no such process in place.

@justasking111 How long ago was that? How many days of what temperature did you get at the time? It's not comparable. When I first moved to London, I bought a tower fan. After 3 years I gave it away as I had never used it. Times are very different now
