It is 2026, and we still have repressed, out of touch, delusional headteachers peddling the nonsense that putting up with a full uniform during a heatwave is somehow virtuous.

Allowing PE kits to be worn on warm days risks setting a precedent. Will heads have to relax uniform requirements at every change in the weather? Such relaxations in standards affect the behaviour of students and the daily routines of the school day. [...]
By relaxing these standards, we run the risk of signalling to the community that we don’t care
Except there is no proof that uniforms are in any way linked to better behaviour nor to academic results. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
The Sutton Trust repeatedly explained as much, e.g. https://www.suttontrust.com/news-opinion/all-news-opinion/smaller-classes-uniforms-primary-homework-among-least-effective-ways-boosting-school-performance/
I am all for disciplines, rules and standards.
But there is a difference between logical rules, enforced for a well-substantiated reason, and capricious rules in place just because.
Not just that - here we are not even talking about abolishing uniform codes, but simply about wearing PE-approved school kit. What on Earth would be wrong with that?
The question is more serious than it may seem, because it links to some key points:
PS The choice of a questionable word like 'hysteria', with its misogynistic etymology, would require a separate discussion - but the readership of the Spectator, and the bootlickers who defend schools' capricious rules, are unlikely to grasp that.
