Daughter struggling with anxiety

MammaMac2616 · Yesterday 18:58

My teenage daughter is struggling with anxiety in school, she specifically struggles with silence or when it’s really quiet in the classrooms. She is receiving support from school but is there anything I could get her to support this?

The problem is that classrooms often need to be silent. For example, while writing.

And fyi read the post, she has severe anxiety, as if she is going to be ‘chatting lots’ in class. Moron.

Oh I’ve heard of people like you. Key board warriors that wallow in their sad, little life’s.

I understand that, which is why I was hoping to branch out on here if anyone’s experienced similar struggles. I have no expectation that silence isn’t needed especially during exams, etc however I’m trying to find a strategy that can aide her during this time.

Could she be allowed to have headphones to play music during quiet times?
Do you know the cause of the anxiety?
Would sitting somewhere different in the classroom help?
How is she at home with silence?

Needs to be addressed, since exams are done in silence even if in a separate room....

Does she not experience silence at other times? At night time?
If she is listening to music or white noise the whole time, she's making the situation worse.
I think she needs counselling, can you pay privately for this to get it quickly

Headphones disrupt the rest of the class, either with their tinny beat or by causing other pupils to want to use their headphones.

Rest of class could just be told it is a reasonable adjustment.
Tinny beat means up too loud.

At college my DD was allowed headphones for work in class to block out the house from other students. It stopped her getting stressed and anxious.

A colleague of mine works with children using remedial hypnosis which is very effective with anxiety. Happy to pass on her details.

God kids aren’t half wrapped in cotton wool these days 🥱

At night time she will often put her ceiling fan on for background noise. She has received counselling and we are seeking more in-depth support too via GP and school.

That could be helpful, she can struggle at home if the house is too quiet, especially is she’s upstairs by herself she struggles.

Feeding anxiety and avoiding situations that make us anxious makes anxiety worse.
Therapy to help her adapt and cope is a better long term solution.

This will help her long term. CBT and exposure therapy can help treat the anxiety.
She won't be allowed headphones in an exam so it's best to sort this quickly

This probably sounds silly but what is it about the silence that she can't cope with? Is it anything to do with her hearing? DH has got dreadful tinnitus and he always has to have some level of noise somewhere so he can't hear the buzzing so loudly. He can't cope with silence at all.

oliviaAustin · Yesterday 20:21

What about silence is it that scares her?

Noyoung · Yesterday 21:13

How old is she? How long has this been going on?

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · Yesterday 21:20

Does a fidget toy help when it’s too quiet ; something to settle the anxiety.
