Moving to Shrewsbury - school recommendations?

I'm interested to hear about schools in Shrewsbury - both primary and secondary.

Are there good state options or would you consider private?

Thinking of moving there at some point and want to be smart about which area we move to. Our child's education is a high consideration.

We would struggle to afford private, could do it for secondary if necessary, but rather not if there are good state options.

If you were moving there, which area would you pick to get the best schools?

OP doesn't exactly sound like someone who doesn't care about education

Well they’re “ good enough” for 95% of kids

"good enough" is an unfortunate turn of phrase @wrinklycactus which may annoy those who have no choice but to use state schools in the area. I would ask MN to amend your post and title to ask for recommendations of schools in the Shrewsbury area.

Apols I don't know the area myself so cannot advise but hope it goes well. Are your DC going to be applying in the normal round or is it an in-year application?

There are buses and trains to Thomas Adams in Wem. Could also stay on to Whitchurch to Sir John Talbot if you don't like the schools in Shrewsbury.

Lots of the schools are in MATs so are changing and need judging on what you see when you visit and from this year's results rather than historically.

Thank you, it was just the AI suggested title - I will ask to modify it.

Not quite sure when we'll move yet so I don't know when they'll apply.

The priory is the best secondary school in Shrewsbury by a very big margin. It’s a comprehensive but you have to live very near to it to get in. Shrewsbury has a single catchment for all secondaries but the intake from priory comes from round the kingsland area of Shrewsbury which is where the big and nice houses are so the intake of priory is academically higher than the other secondaries.
primary schools I would say, good primary schools are coleham, bowbrook (but that’s a new school so not open to all school years yet) and Oxon.
the above schools are good enough that you would not need to go to private.

avoid being in the Shrewsbury academy secondary catchment by all means. If you do end up in the north of Shrewsbury so the catechumens of Shrewsbury academy apply to either the Corbet school in baschurch or Thomas Adams in Wem. Thomas adams has buses to it from Shrewsbury
