Filming GCSE PE

Hello
my son is doing GCSE PE and we need to film his cricket matches. Had anyone had an experience of this. Did you just use your mobile phone? Did you film the whole match? Did you get agreement from all the players playing in the match to be filmed. Thanks so much

Swim ones used go pro and had consent forms signed.

For netball we used a phone, the coach sent a message beforehand (for both teams) and checked no one objected at the start of the match . Normally there were several people filming so it wasn’t an issue.

Make sure you get plenty of detail of exactly how much needs to be filmed as my sons cricket chat was full of parents trying to get last minute footage for gcse pe!

I just used my phone, my arms hurt! Try to borrow a tripod. We just asked permission from the other team. You have to try and focus on your player (maybe easier in cricket than netball). Very boring though 😂

This happens every year for GCSE PE. Coach generally sends out consent forms the week before match to all players and phones set up on tripod stand to record whole match.

@FiftyLBthey want to see his specific skills, so you can use video of him in the nets as well. They aren’t wanting to watch a whole match so get some good nets footage and some good match highlights

Check your syllabus and with the PE department as it varies depending on the exam board. I’ve had to film rugby league, climbing and basketball for AQA and it was a mixture of skills and matches. The split was 10 marks for the skills and 15 for a match. Skills were individual techniques e.g. drop kicks, passing, catching etc For the matches my sons had to speak to the camera giving their name, position and then turning to show their number. I used a tripod and an iPhone and filmed each half separately. The issue I found was compressing the file and sending it to Dropbox but hopefully you ‘re more technically minded. If you’re able to film a couple of matches you can select the one that shows off their skills the best.

I just asked the opposing team coach if I could film and why - never refused and they were often filming as well.

Check the requirements as you only have this summer to film and if you get it wrong you won’t have another opportunity to film before it needs to be submitted. Your school may be able to rate him based on performance in school matches which may then be moderated. The school could assess rugby union in school for GCSE but not league. (I’d still get some film though just in case).

To add - I had to film the full match and then my sons had to complete a table that gave the time, the skill demonstrated including strategy etc so the examiners have a guide.

Have a really good look at the marking criteria so you know exactly what skills / techniques the examiners are looking for and what high scoring evidence shows in comparison to low scoring evidence. Don’t just think you need to film a match!

School may have given you this information but you can also look on the relevant exam board website.

Edit and annotate the video to make it easy for the examiner to award marks.

We had to do this for my DD but a different sport. Search GCSE PE cricket video on YouTube to get some examples. We used a phone and DD did the annotations and edits. It doesn't need to be a professional shoot!
