Year 11 GCSE maths, what's actually working for revision?

The best thing to do esp at this stage (one exam done already?) is past papers and past-paper-style questions (lots of online options). Mark them carefully and see where there are gaps then revise those.

The best revision for maths is to do questions.
If you are doing foundation go big on ratios, percentages and 'best buy' questions.
If you make 'silly mistakes' make a list of them so they are more in the forefront of your mind, and in the exam double check you haven't made them.

Also:

  • Don't panic
  • In more complex questions where you can't see the end, just do things you can see and you might reach a place where you can see the end.
  • Give things a go, you don't lose marks for doing something wrong

My child who was not very able at maths had a breakthrough when she started spending a whole chunk of time (e.g. half a day) on past paper questions on just one topic. Whole past papers weren't helping her at all - overwhelming - but exam style questions on one topic started to get manageable. Then, when she felt she'd mastered that topic, she'd move on to the next. Not sure what websites have exam questions organised by topics these days, but find them!

The other problem with doing whole past papers is that it can mean wasting time on the topics that are secure. Whilst it gives you a nice feeling when you do a question you're completely sure of, the time is better spent on the less secure topics.

Maths DIY has questions grouped by topic. It is what DC school have suggested to use.
