Call from pastoral support

DS whacked his eye on the arm of the sofa this morning while he was upset - sort of threw himself onto it. It’s puffy and has a bit of a graze but he went to school ok.

I got a call from pastoral support asking how it happened - why? I asked if he was upset at school as he had been generally very emotional this morning but they said he was fine.

My lot get bumps and scratches all the time from climbing, scooting, falling over etc and have never had a call before, presumably the nature of the I out has triggered some sort of welfare check? I know they have to do this sort of thing but it just made me feel really awkward…

Probably because it was his eye and not the normal elbows/knees type place. Bruises and marks in unusual places can be a sign of abuse and while I doubt they are thinking that, it does need to be checked and the school need to cover their arse and log they have enquired about it.

Black eyes that aren’t the result of a more general tumble with other bumps and scuffs are unusual for an accident.

So it’ll have raised a red flag and they’re following up. In isolation it’s not a concern for you and reassuring to know that Theyre actually paying attention.

Fair enough - thanks!

Hindsight is great but I think I would have explained this to school myself, a visibly injured eye is going to raise alarm bells and they are right to look into it. Could easily be a safeguarding concern and they need to be vigilant.
