Surrey pre prep - year 2 and to 11+

We have a son in year 1 at Milbourne lodge and thinking of moving him due to low numbers in the year group. It’s a great school and no complaints. We are looking at Claremont fan court and Parkside. Claremont seems great but they don’t prepare them for 11+ as it’s expected they stay all through, and we might want to consider other schools at 11+
Parkside does prepare for 11+ but reviews (although old) seem to suggest it’s more nurturing than academic. We want a school he will enjoy, with sporting opportunities, not declining numbers, and decent academics. Any advice?

Caterham would seem to tick your boxes.

Like the other PP suggests, Caterham is one to consider. Is the only reason for moving schools due to low numbers? What about friendships? There is lots of movement in years 1-3 across local schools so you may find more children will join the year group.

I wouldn't consider Caterham. It is absolutely miles away from your area, presuming you aren't looking to relocate? Also, it doesnt prepare for 11+ and 13+ as it is feeds their senior school. Look at Shrewsbury House (now part of St Paul's), but also feeding a very similar broad range of top schools like Milbourne Lodge. It academic, sporty and musical- so something for everyone. Other similar schools in the area to look at are Hampton Prep, Kings House, and Rokeby.

What is it about having low numbers in the year group that makes you consider moving your son? I'd consider a small class with the opportunity for more individual attention a benefit.

Thanks for the replies - there’s only 9 boys in the year group currently which is why we are looking to move. Socially that’s not many kids for friendships and not enough for sports teams as not all boys will want to play. We want a bigger cohort. I’ve looked at Shrewsbury and agree it’s ideal but just a bit too far.

How about Surbiton Boys Prep or Hampton prep on the bus routes? Hampton prep now has automatic entry to Hampton School. Otherwise Daneshill/Felton Fleet.

I think it’s worth looking at this in terms of pathway rather than just the school itself.
Having worked across both selective and non-selective settings, the main difference is that schools like Claremont Fan Court School tend to take a longer-term, all-through approach, so there’s less emphasis on 11+ preparation as they expect many children to stay on.

Prep schools that regularly send children on at 11+ are usually more familiar with those processes and will build some of that into school life, but even then a lot of families still use external support alongside.

I’d definitely visit both and ask very specific questions, for example:

  • where do children go at 11+ if they leave
  • how many sit external exams
  • what support is given for those applying out
In general, non-selective environments can feel more balanced day to day, but you sometimes need to be a bit more proactive if you want to keep options open later.

I have personal experience of both Surbiton Boys Prep and Hampton Prep - both have a lot to offer. Hampton now gives a free pass to seniors (although you may find getting a place tough) and Surbiton Boys Prep is great with sound 11+ prep.

How many are in year 1 at Millborne Lodge?
