Confused about GCSE exam costs — here’s what I found

I’ve been trying to understand GCSE exam costs and honestly it’s really confusing. Different places show different prices and it’s hard to know the real cost.
From what I found:
Exam fee is usually not the full cost
Centres charge extra fees
Private candidates often pay much more
So total can easily go much higher than expected.
It took me a while to properly understand all of this because the information online is very scattered.
If anyone wants a full detailed breakdown (including all hidden costs), just comment and I’ll share it.

The vast majority of YP taking GCSEs are taking them in a state school – there are costs for sure, but they are borne by the school, out of its budget, so parents pay nothing (apart from their taxes, obvs!).

Those who are at private school are charged in some way – sometimes it is an actual bill for exams, often it is as part of the fees – so the school charges more for KS4 to account for that.

Those who take GCSEs as private candidates will have to pay the exam centre; fees vary and are sometimes based on the number of papers; also A levels usually cost more than GCSE and late bookings will cost more. All that info is quite transparent on the exam centre websites tho.

I'm puzzled as to what you have found confusing? And as I say, for maybe 90% of YP it’s not an issue anyway.
