What’s the question?

Ngan123 · 08/04/2026 22:36

Odd one out

There are 4 boxes not 2.

This is one reason I would never put my kids thru this. In what world would they EVER need to know this??? Unless becoming a teacher to teach this to others!!!

Decacaffeinatednow · 08/04/2026 22:50

B is the only one with 2 Xs and 2 Os. Though I can’t see E clearly.
Edited to say E has 2 of each as well.

It’s not supposed to test knowledge, it’s testing pattern spotting which is a key component of flexible intelligence. It’s trying to find the kids that will thrive in academic environments without specifying a subject or prior knowledge. Tutoring for them unfortunately undoes some of their value but what can you do?

I get that I just think it’s a bit bizarre but each to their own!
out local grammar isn’t the best the comp gets good results so I’m not overly concerned with it tbfh

LokeyCokey · 08/04/2026 23:00

Something to do with space around the X’s and O’s? Not sure how to describe it other than B is more roomy!

minipie · 08/04/2026 23:03

Yes it’s the only one with excess space round the shapes.

Shit question though if that is the reason

Whether or not they go to a grammar school, I think it is good for their development to come across these questions. I know people who pass the grammar test but then chose to go to a comprehensive school because of location etc.

There are valid reasons for not putting your child in for the 11+, but 'I don't want them encountering questions that won't be of any use in real life' isn't one of them! They will learn loads of things in school that they will probably never use. It's about learning to think and use your brain in different ways.
