Schools research

Just moved to UK with my 4 year old, I’m looking at schools at the moment and finding it a bit of a minefield! still debating independent vs state, not sure if its worth the money?
I’ve looked at Ofsted, school websites, random forum threads, WhatsApp chats with other parents… and I still don’t feel very confident about it all.
How did you do it? Anything you found genuinely useful (or things you wish you’d ignored)?

For us it was pretty easy; certainly didn't have the money for private, so looked at our state schools within walking distance. Liked one so listed it first.

What schools are local to you @Ritz008 ? There's a lot to be said for being able to walk to and from school at this age tbh.

In any case if your DC is 4 now they will be starting in Sept this year so your application will be a late one. I would apply to your LA for schools you like in your area as soon as possible. You will be offered a place but possibly not at your first preference.

I think you are overthinking it, especially as you will be doing a late application after places have been allocated. If you were privately educated and had a good experience, then choose private if you can afford it. Otherwise you'll guilt trip yourself and will find the state sector lacking. Otherwise, see which local schools have places and ask to visit. Go by your gut feel on a visit.

When was your child 4? If before September 1st 2925, you will be limited for choice by the spaces already being allocated for Reception in state schools and class size restrictions and need to submit an In Year application. If after, the application would already be after the deadline to start Reception in September 2026 and initial allocations are made in April. State school applications are through your Local Authority.

Private schools may similarly have already made offers but there will be some movement over the summer term, each process will differ and you would need to make contact with any you like individually.

thank you, have a place secured in local school for now, but we are open to move anywhere in England as we both have remote jobs. Researching such a wide is overwhelming as i dont know where to start. Schools are big factor whereever we decide to move, was hoping to get some feedback from existing parents as well on the schools if possible.

Whatever you do, your application will either be late main round (if you move soon), or a mid-year application. Either way, you will be dependent 1.on a place being available in what you have been told is the most desirable school and 2. your DC being ranked top of the waiting list , if you are not the only applicant at the time. This is highly unlikely for a 'desirable' school, if you ate hoping to secure a place in advance of moving to the area.

There must be a reason why you moved to where you have, if the whole country is your oyster, as the saying goes, so why not settle there for a while, let your DC make friends at school etc?
