DD wants to learn Latin

suedonim · 13/06/2008 22:33

12yo Dd has said she wants to learn Latin. We live in Nigeria, her international school doesn't teach it and I'm not hopeful of finding a tutor. Are there any 'DIY' resources that those in the know would recommend?

That's an unusual ambition what prompted that?

RTKangaMummy · 13/06/2008 22:44

KANGABOY has been doing it for 2 years and uses these books

He loves it and is about to start Ancient Greek as well

Cambridge Latin Course offers supported distance learning. It's not cheap though. The first book is £175. I don't know how good the support is, but I know the books are good- I used them at school!

suedonim · 13/06/2008 23:23

Goodness, I didn't expect so many replies so thank you!

Littlelapin, do you sell those books? I'd definitely be interested in them. There's no postal service here but I could get them when I come home (I shall be boarding the flight in exactly two weeks time!) for the summer. Do you think the online tutorials needs a decent internet connection to work? Because we have very haphazard internet.

The other links look good as well, though I shall hold off the £175 one at the moment, in case it's one of dd's fads!

Madcol, dd's always been interested in the origin of words and has been a spelling and grammar pedant since about the age of 8. She now has an inspiring French teacher who has made dd think about other languages and it's triggered off an interest. Neither dh or I did Latin so we're no help at all.

Suedonim, how lovely that your DD wants to learn Latin. Both Marina and I run Latin clubs for Year 5/6 children using Minimus books. Not a lot of use to you, I fear, because the pupil book is not a lot of use on its own and the teachers book is £40 or so, but the website is great and Barbara Bell, who runs it, is lovely and may well have some useful advice. I know she will reply if you email her.
Have a look at the Minimus website there is some good stuff on there. The Usborne book Lapin linked to is also very good and there is this one too which I bought on Marina's recommendation and is excellent.

I see Rosa has already advised you about Minimus We both enjoy teaching it and I am sure your dd would love learning it.
Maybe we can set her up with an international Minimus Pen Pal - and I'd be quite happy to help out via e-mail if you want

My daughter's new school has brought back Latin having dropped it from the timetable about 7 years ago!!! She will start learning in September, in Y7.

I am so pleased.

Blandmum · 14/06/2008 07:32

Cambridge latin, for beginers, have an on line facility that is free. I did it when I was in school

Blandmum · 14/06/2008 07:35

free online stuff startes here

That is, I did cambridge latin, not the electronic version. I'm from the days of wax tablets, me!

suedonim · 14/06/2008 17:22

Thank you so much for all the links and offers of help! I love the Minimus course, it's very attractive.

I think I'll start off with the Usborne books over the holidays and see how dd takes to it. If she wants to do more then I can order extra stuff before we come back to Lagos in September.

And MB, lol @ wax tablets.

have a look at the free online Cambridge stuff. It isn't as good as working with the books as well, but it isn't bad for nowt, and it will let you see how 'real' the enthusiasm is before you put your hand in your pocket.

suedonim · 14/06/2008 17:56

I shall do. I'm going to wait until we get home and have an internet connection that doesn't take three days to download a page. It can sooooooo frustrating here.

I had to drop Latin when I changed schools and I have always been gutted about it.

suedonim · 14/06/2008 18:52

It's never too late, NAB! Lots of resources on this thread with which to kick start your Latin.

NotABanana · 14/06/2008 18:54

I might just do that.

scaryteacher · 15/06/2008 00:02

The first textbook from the Cambridge course is £10.50, not £175.00!! There are also other resources available as well, which look reasonably priced for this sort of thing.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 15/06/2008 14:24

MB - many thanks - I did the cambridge latin course at school, loved it (had two fantastci teachers)and did A-level. Listening vauguely a few weeks ago when the DCs and DH were watching Dr Who, the Vesuvius episode, and was astonished to hear ref to 'Caecilius, Metella.., and trotted thru to see what was going on... In teh Dr Who confidential afterwards, the write was talking about the CLC - obviously it has inspired even more illustious figures than me
DS has been looking at the Minimus books - he starts Latin @ school in Sept, and is quite eager.
