Name labels policy

Just curious about name labels at primary school. I am thinking of buying one of the ‘attach a tag’ name labelling machine but as yet I’m not sure what school my children will go to or whether schools tend to require specific types of labels and/ or what is required to be on the label.

Children are at preschool now so I need to label their clothes for that with just their names. If I buy the machine now and then find out that at primary school they need to have all sorts of info on the label - class name, phone number..? - then it would make the labelling machine a bit of a useless waste of money.

So if you’re bored and don’t mind sharing, please let me know whether you/ parents at your primary school use the attach a tag or similar (plastic tag) labelling system and also, crucially, what info does your school ask you to include on the labels?

thank you!

Most schools would be delighted the stuff has a name in it!!!
Don't over think this. Unless you are paying ££££ for a school, do whatever you want in terms if labels.

I found that sewing in name tapes was the best way, with sticky labels on lunch boxes, drinks bottles etc. The traditional name tapes from Cash were the easiest to sew - other makes were made of different fabric and were much more difficult.
Full name - you don't need the class otherwise you would need to redo everything when they move up a year.

We used woven name tapes with first name + last name.
Bought 200 I think, and they lasted from Primary through to College.

Definitely not class or phone number.

Same here, they lasted all though school.

You only need their name. I’ve used Stikins all the way through for all mine. Can be used for clothes, lunchboxes, shoes, whatever.
You can put your name twice on the label and then cut them in half.

I doubt you'll find a school where they specify what needs to be on a name label like that. Classes and phone numbers change so those are unlikely to ever be needed!

Mostly jumper are identified through the sense of smell...

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/01/2026 09:45

Any name label is great. Even a name in biro on the size label in the clothes. Better than:

Parent: he's lost his jumper
Me: does it have his name in it?
Parent: no but it's blue age 4-5
Me: (trying not to roll eyes) blue is the school uniform and all the children in this class are aged 4 to 5.

To be fair I did once have a child who could identify his clothes by the smell.

Ha! Cross posted re the smell 🤣

I can't even imagine needing phone numbers, etc on a label. Is that really a thing? Would seem to raise all kinds of safeguarding issues if a jumper was misplaced in a playground.
I bought a load of pre-printed labels when they were tiny, then ended up just scrawling surname somewhere with a black pen.

TokenGinger · 14/01/2026 10:00

It just needs their name on. We have stickers with their name on (they’re surprisingly excellent and withstand many washes and the tumble dryer). And we also have a stamp with just the surname on so it can be used for both kids (we have an uncommon surname so works for us).

TeenToTwenties · 14/01/2026 10:15

We also had a large sheet of stickers which went on water bottles, lunchboxes, inside shoes etc.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 14/01/2026 10:18

The stamper is my fave I think it was called statistic or something

just stamp the kids name super easy

ViaRia01 · 14/01/2026 10:22

@SomersetBrie no it doesn’t seem to be a thing. I wasn’t sure what else may be needed so I was just asking the question.

I did think it would be a faff to require the year or class name (as it would need changing each year) but to be honest, from posts on here I’ve seen, it wouldn’t have been the most bonkers school requirement I’ve heard of! But it’s a relief that it doesn’t seem to be needed

The only rules I have heard of before are boarding schools who insist on sew in labels as they launder the clothes. Your regular primary school will be glad you bothered. I got the stick in ones and they never came off, were brilliant. We don't have a common surname so just had surname on them and could pass them down my DC.

Nevergotdivorced · 14/01/2026 10:41

GDPR rulings would mean a phone number would never be on a label and anyway imagine how wide the label would have to be!

I have always sewn woven tapes on, our children’s school uniforms(independent) also required a school number it was 4 digits.

123ZYX · 14/01/2026 10:45

We used “my name tags” and I got DS to design his own (you can choose a picture and background) so that he could recognise his own before he could recognise his name.

they do stickers and iron on tags so I got one of each. It was useful that his water bottle matched his jumper, for example, so that he only had to learn one design

madnessitellyou · 15/01/2026 20:21

Sharpie.

That’s all you need.
