Fluent reading, poor comprehension

My DD (7) is a fluent reader (thought not an enthusiastic one) but not quite keeping up with comprehension skills at school. We read a lot at home and I ask all the questions you’re supposed to ask but does anyone have any textbooks or online resources that help with this sort of thing? I saw Headsprout recommended in a few places but it doesn’t exist anymore…

I know you say you read a lot at home, but when you do this do you take it in turns? When it is your turn to read, do you take great care to read expressively? Does your DD do the same? You can have some fun with this - exaggerate voices, try different accents etc. Make each other laugh.

You can also play 'opposite' games. Read a paragraph describing an idyllic countryside scene, and then describe your own version, eg instead of 'cottage' say 'warehouse' and instead of the scent of flowers describe the stench of sewage etc.

You can also see who can come up with the best range of alternative words - maybe some synonyms (for kind it could be friendly, gentle, generous, easy-going, smiling etc.) and then some antonyms.

See who can find the first hint of a person's character - was it something about their appearance, or something the author used to set the atmosphere before the character was introduced etc.

At this sort of age, I think exploring books together in this way is much more valuable than working through comprehension exercises.

Look into DLD. Reading well but weak comprehension would be a key indicator of DLD.
