british bulldog is normally banned. It always ends up being either

a)a massive punch fest or
b) a roaring stampede which mows down weedy kids

Hulababy · 10/06/2008 20:02

Bulldog was banned when I was at school, some 25+ years ago. I ended up at casulty after playing it when some lad ran directly into me, sent me falling backwards and cracking my head and cutting it open. Ouch! Still played it the week after though, lol.

At DD's school they all skip.

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/06/2008 20:03

Probably can't do that thing with a ball in a pair of tights or french skipping with dangerous elastic - harrumph !

IdrisTheDragon · 10/06/2008 20:05

Bulldog was banned when I was at school - I never played it so don't know when it was banned - just knew it was. That was about 25 years ago.

pointydog · 10/06/2008 20:05

lol @ skip.

Hullo sky, hullo clouds, say fotherington Thomas

misdee · 10/06/2008 20:08

i cant remember how to play britsih bulldog but dh said it was banned at his school.

we werent allowed to play red rover in the playground after a few kids going over the top of the arm-chains and ending up with bloddied noses, so could only play it on the field in the summer.

are these games not in fact just different names for exactly the same violent game

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/06/2008 20:12

I used to play ponies a lot, jumping over the netball lines with my friend...

misdee · 10/06/2008 20:13

no.

stuck in the mud, when you got tag you had tostand still with arms out-stretched or legs wide open and someone who wasnt it woud have to dive under the arms or between legs so you could get unstuck.

redrover, two teams arms linked, team one shouts over to team 2, 'red rover red rover send sarah(on team 2) right over' sarah then has to run towards team 1, if she breaks through the arm chain then goes back to her team if she cant break through then joins team 1. then its team 2's turn. carry on till one or two people left on a team or lunch break or over.

Why lol @ skip???

I just meant that these game sin Op no longer played in ehr primary. They all do skipping games as an alternative - either individually or in small groups with a longer rope.

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/06/2008 20:19

skipping was fab

misdee · 10/06/2008 20:20

what about french skipping?

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 10/06/2008 20:21

yes,with the elastic !

littlemadam · 10/06/2008 21:55

Gosh this takes me back

We played Bulldog, ball in tights and stuck in the mud at our primary - we also had a marble season - about two weeks, which was brilliant - do kids still play marbles?

Ds plays Bulldog at his school, but very small school so might not be as manic!

MingMingtheWonderPet · 10/06/2008 21:57

Bulldog and Stuck in the Mud were great!

Almost certainly banned now, far too much fun.

i remember when clackers got banned lol. (the second time round, the crappy palstic ones)

OP posts:
margoandjerry · 10/06/2008 22:01

loved elastics. Jingle jangle centre spangle jingle jangle out.

Marina · 10/06/2008 22:01

Dcs play What's the Time, hopscotch, dd knows skipping games and wants to learn French skipping, they all play a rather dubious variant of "It" called..."F" (I just don't want to know I've decided) and do Lolo ball jousts as well.
Bulldog was banned for good reason. Ours was always like Thermopylae, with limbs, clumps of hair and even small children flying through the air

I can remember the second verse of jingle jangle that is self explanatory:

on in out on out in off !

LambethLil · 10/06/2008 22:09

Apparently the 70s, which is when I guess was when most of us were at school, was the 'golden age' of playground games. I remember skipping, french elastic handstands and "riots" in the summer of the Brixton and St Pauls. I had to go and collect DD1 as she came over all flustered yesterday. She'd been playing cops and robbers! Bless. She's 11 and at an all girls' school.
