Has anyone ever told private school they could no longer afford the fees, if so, did they offer you a reduction?

Have started a thread on primary section regarding removing my DD from independent school due to severe financial issues.

Going to speak to the Head of DD's school tomorrow to inform him I am looking into removing her to send her to a local State school - just wondered if anyone had ever done this and if so, what was the outcome?

Well, to say I am gobsmacked is an understatement - went to see the Head today at DD school - he is going to talk to the bursar as in his words "I don't like to my children, we will most probably be able to help you, even if it is only until she finishes Year 2". I said to him "I was more worried that you would charge me for the rest of the term" - he said he wouldn't do that.

Well what a fabulous man. Just goes to show that they do care and it is not just about the money.

He is going to let me know Thursday what they propose.

We may have a reprieve. I am not getting too excited but it sounds promising.

On the other hand, I went to see the school by my mums. Very happy with it, it was lovely, would be more than happy to send her there.

It'll be easier to move her now than if you have to at the end of year 2. Without going into detail, do you think you will have the funds to pay for her after yr 2?

That's what we will have to consider dramaqueen. At least he has offered which is

How old is your younger child now? We were in a very similar situation - put older child in independent school as we moved into this area and the state school allocation was not suitable for him..had younger child in nursery there all ready to join reception - then dh was made redundant.
I had already put in dd's application for local state schools (just in case) and as she was reception age we got a place for her in a very good state school (our catchment school)...then because dd had a place, the state school also accepted ds. Ds will be joining the state school at yr 3 (it is easier to get kids in at yr 3 because the restriction on class size numbers is removed at this age).

Trying to say, if you have similar aged children and can stay at current school til end of yr 2..you will have a good chance of a state school at yr 3, especially if you can get younger child into reception there.

The teachers from both state and indep. have said that the end of yr 2 is an ideal time for children to move, a lot move school then anyway (into Juniors, or Prep schools).

Millarkie - DD2 is 9 months, DD1 will be in Year 5 when DD2 starts reception. They usually start in Kindergarten at 3 in the Independent school but DD1 didn't, she just started last year in reception.

I agree with changing at the end of Year 2, one of DD1's friend may be moving to the Independent School where her older brother attends.
