Moving to Alresford - looking for primary and secondary school recommendations and advice

My partner and I both grew up in Winchester and attended King's and Henry B over 20 years ago, so we know the area/surrounding areas well. We moved away to another county for various reasons three years ago with our then 1.5 year old. He is now 4.5 and currently in reception and we are buying a house back in Hampshire in Alresford, as we have realised we don't want to be away from our family network long-term (we are moving now before our son makes too many friends and connections etc).

Long story short, we are looking for the right primary school in the area with the bigger picture of secondary schools in mind. Have had a nightmare with primary admissions so far outside of Hampshire, so we are keen to tee things up for more success with this move. Can't quite afford what we want in central Winchester and love Alresford as a town to live and the schools in the area look good on paper. Have visited various schools nearby but looking for further insight that we might not get from a visit.

Anyone have any insight into Itchen Abbas, Cheriton, Ropley and Sun Hill? We really like Itchen Abbas, but concerned about an onward journey to Henry Beaufort, as have heard less favourable things about it in comparison to other secondaries in the area, (would love Westgate but I guess that is unlikely due to catchment and how good it is doing in recent years). Also, would really like some feedback on Perins (which we are in catchment for); I have heard great things, but equally really bad things, so not quite sure how to judge it. Of course we would visit all schools in time, but before we make the final commitment with our purchase, we want to at least have done all the research we could have to give us the best chance of settling for many years.

Please be kind, thanks!

I think at 4.5 you have 6 years before Secondary and schools can change massively in that time.
My info is 10yrs old now but I have heard generally good things about all 3 Winchester schools, plus also Perrins. And of course Peter Symonds, Barton and Sparsholt.

Both Perins and HB are good. You will hear bad things about all the schools as there is always someone unhappy. That includes Westgate btw as it also have it's issues!

If your child has SEN you need to pick which school is best placed to manage those particular needs. That is usually the issue when parents are not happy with a school and I think HB is felt to favour high achievers in a recent negative Facebook thread but the others would easily be accused of that also.
If your child is academic ect they will thrive in any of these schools. Lots of very happy parents of high achievers around for all those schools.
But honestly you have a 4 year old , schools change so far too early for you to pick a secondary.
Be aware in Winchester a lot of self selection goes on . Wealthy pushy parents can afford to buy in catchment of a certain school so then that school will always be the top school. Has always been the way in the Winchester area. Thornden being the classic example. Westgate is currently doing well due to this trend. Previously it was kings!
Just relax Perins is a good school.

DD has friends at Perins and they’re all happy and parents happy with the school. The head at Ropley was SLT and taught my eldest earlier in his career, he is great.
I really wouldn’t worry. All the schools are great, and there are lots of the country that would love to be in that position with genuine choice but the problem is then that parents split hairs and also become very vocal if there’s something they don’t like. You’ll hear positives and negatives about all schools, just go round and make your own mind up.

Thanks @TeenToTwenties @Persephoneofhell @Ionacat - that’s really helpful and does put my mind at rest.

Following this thread with interest as we might be moving down that way at some point in the next couple of years and I was at Ropley in the 1980s..!

@Stillwearinggloves - I'll let you know how we get on. Hoping for a February/March move date fingers crossed so might have more questions nearer the time. I'm visiting Sun Hill and Preston Candover next week hopefully. Any experiences with primary schools would be great.

Perins is great. The students are polite and respectful. It’s cool to be academic, sporty or dramatic. They put on some outstanding performances at The Grange opera house (have a look at Perins Theatre on YouTube).
Alton schools are pretty good but I would say Perins has a definite edge on the Alton schools which have more behavioural issues. Amery is better than Eggars if you are looking into Alton. You can compare them on the government website.
Pretty much all the primaries are lovely. They each have their own distinct personalities so it’s personal preference. Cheriton is small and nurturing. Ropley is academic, Sun Hill is well rounded and obviously convenient. Itchen Abbas is a bit far out perhaps. I’ve heard mixed things about Preston Candiver.
Like any educational establishments in the country, you will hear good and bad reports, as no 2 people have the same experiences or views on education.
I would say you can’t really go wrong with any of the schools in the area.
