I’m interested in hearing about where you go as parents for careers advice for your teens? I’ve just started a parent group because I couldn’t find much anywhere!

Is your teen at school in England? If so they have access to advice and guidance in school.

Yes he was at school but it was limited information in my opinion and didnt provide alternative opportunities other than Uni & apprenticeships. I was looking for more than this which is out there but not very accessible. I found out about courses in Adventure Sport, Cadetships and lots of other options in the end

My children found the prospects.ac.uk provided useful info about different careers and roles; its implicit focus is on those considering university or at university but has broader application. The descriptions of roles seems reasonable accurate (where I can match them to my own experience) and the analysis founded on data from sources such as the graduate destinations surveys.

@HelenRivero My dc did the Morrisby test. This gathers info about likes, dislikes, and what skills dc has and produces possible career areas to consider. I remember DD1s was very accurate! Not sure what the cost is now. Also agree that prospects is worth looking at. Also take a close look at what he enjoys at school. Is he practical? Is he motivated by money? Working outside?

In the end, it’s either work and training, FE or HE at 18.

Thank you, that’s useful. I guess I was just searching for alternatives like outdoor activities which I did find in the end, but it wasn’t really what the schools were talking about. I work in the young people space and created an assessment tool so he’s done those types of things already. I wondered if there were any other parents wondering what their teenager will do if they don’t want to follow the Uni or apprenticeship routes…I did find an outdoor adventure diploma which my son ended up doing and he’s loving it! I just wish there was more information on ‘alternative’ Further Education..
