QCA Tests YEAR 4 - How to Understand the results and do they have value

Hello - I would appreciate any help on how to decipher the results - not being a pushy parent(honest) and not saying the results as always nervous about that type of thread - just don't feel I get enough feedback from the school - he has his reading result (level-score-standardised score) but what does it tell me? All help appreciated. I have been to the QCA website so can see how the score was made up but not what it means for him. Many Thanks

The standardised score is probably the most helpful. This will take account of his age and 100 is average.

An average child in Year 4 should get level 3.

Thank you - the standardised is useful - he got a 4 - but according to him the whole class (of 14) got a 4 so I didn't think that was useful - he is probably confused - they do have them externally marked but would have thought that it was unlikely.

Why don't you just ask his teacher how she thinks he's doing?

RustyBear · 04/06/2008 12:31

When you say 'the whole class' do you mean he is in a class of 14 & that is the whole year, or is that his literacy set. If he's in the top set for literacy, it's quite likey they all got a level 4.

Level 4 is actually split up into 4a,4b & 4c (a is highest) so there will probably be some variation, but the school may not report this.

Do you know who does the external marking, as ime this is unusual for Year 4 optional SATs.

Frogs - I have so tried - thought I would give self service a go!

RustyBear - this is the writing test and according to the QCA website this does not split 4 into A/B/C although the others seem to. He did say the whole class yes (and said it was really unusual)- it is not a set but they are selective so given that 4 in this case covers a wide range maybe he is correct - he told me his score/number and then said the standardisation that it relates to which I have checked to be correct. Thanks for your help - not sure who marks them might ask though.

Thanks all
