ADHD in Children’s Literature

Hello,

I’m wondering if someone might be able to help me. I’m a final year student writing my dissertation about ADHD representations in children’s literature and how it may help/hinder teaching practices. I wondered if there were any parents or teachers out there who might be able to recommend a book which they thought was helpful or not in terms of representing/advocating ADHD and informing which resulted in greater understanding and provision in the classroom.

The books I have considered so far are:
the Someday Birds
Focused
Percy Jackson
Joey Pigza
The Ethan I was Before

This is a huge ask but if anyone has any helpful suggestions I’d really appreciate it!! X

Honestly, no. Without tenuous links, I don't think you could argue it.

I'm unsure about Anne of Green Gables too, I think her behaviour is linked to early trauma.

Thank you for setting me straight on that one - someone mentioned it but I wasn't sure. You're all such a great and knowledgeable bunch xx Can you help write my paper as well! 😘

Tigger in winnie the pooh is a stereotype

It genuinely sounds fascinating!

My money is on Mildred Hubble (the worst witch). She tries so hard, but everything seems to come so naturally to everyone else, has a very strong sense of Justice, is creative, and loves animals.

Wooster from Jeeves and W, was probably based on someone with those traits prior to knowledge of adhd. Similarly Blandings by the same author

Basically all the naughty/spirited characters- Dennis the Menace, Horrid Henry, Mr Toad, Bobby in St Clares and Anne of Green Gables all outed as ADHD by my ND children!

My favourite series as a child!! I hadn't thought of it that way! x

It’s amazing that so many people can diagnose a character so confidently.

Is it Confirmation bias? Once you know what you're looking for you see it everywhere. Much like the patriarchy.

I think it could be trauma and ADHD with Anne of Green Gables.

Interesting thread.

I know it's not ADHD, but I'm a Johanna Spyri fan and have read her fictions on Project Gutenberg and remember a couple of child characters who I'd consider ASD. For example, Fred in https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/15727/pg15727.txt.
