Brighton College

Hi. My son will start Brighton College next year. We will move from Windsor to somewhere around the school. I work in Barking. I will drive to work and my son can use the school bus. We need to find a nice neighborhood as tenants (a detached) around 30-40 mins away from Brighton College and 1 hr to Barking. We searched online the Pease Pottage and Handcross. We need suggestions please. Thanks.

did you not think about this before you chose the school?

pease pottage and handcross both right at the end of school bus lines. They are a 30 minute drive if you're going straight in by car but on a stopping bus? At least an hour.

And Barking is a way longer drive than the 1 hour you're hoping for.

The fundamental issue is the distance between Brighton and Barking - and there's no solution to that.

Agree Barking by road is a nightmare. If you can do the train it is probably at least 1 hr 15 via London Bridge. Maybe Haywards Heath or Lewes would work and he could use train not bus.

Thank you very much for the information. Our application has already gone through and we received late route acceptance. I have only recently changed jobs, and now my working hours and days are flexible – I can work from home on chosen days and avoid rush-hour commuting. At the moment I already travel 1 hour 40 minutes from where we live, but with flexible hours it hasn’t been a problem.
What I am really looking for is some advice on an area that wouldn’t put my son too far from school, but at the same time would shorten my own commute a little. We don’t know the region at all, so any suggestions would be very helpful.

Barking? As in, East London Barking?!

LIZS · 25/09/2025 21:28

How far is “not too far”? Lots of kids commute to the Brighton schools from mid Sussex. Handcross Park is a feeder prep but there is not much to the area nearby.

feliciabirthgiver · 26/09/2025 00:11

How about Hassocks (or surrounding area like Hurstpierpoint), not sure about buses but good train links for London and Brighton.

He is now taking the school bus for 40 mins.

My son can have a 30 mins bus ride (his current bus route takes 40mins), and I can drive 80 mins (even shorter than what I do right now). Unfortunately, things can’t always be ideal, but I’m trying to find the most suitable option under the current circumstances.

I'm confused - are you the OP or a different person with the same problem?

OP name fail change?

Same. My son is in Yr8 right now in a prep school in Crowthorne and we live 40 mins away from his school and I started work at Barking which already is 1hr 40mins drive. We are trying to sort out where to lmove when he starts BC 4th form next September.

Trainsplanesandbuses · 26/09/2025 07:28

OP by coincidence I have DCs at Brighton College & also travel to East London (Newham/Barking) for work. It’s a horrible drive - M25 & A13 are a nightmare & just getting across the Dartford Crossing can take an hour. If I were you I’d look at Haywards Heath area. Good rail links to London & Brighton. Your DC could get the train to Brighton & walk/bus to school from the station if needed & you can get the train to London Bridge & tube to Barking. Long journey for all but preferable to Handcross where you’d be a long way from a fast rail connection.

Got it. You're just, accidently, posting under two different names which is what confused me.

C0NFUSEDIAM · 26/09/2025 08:03

Why not Brighton?

C0NFUSEDIAM · 26/09/2025 08:06

How much do you have to spend? Most of the small villages north of Brighton are lovely. Filming, Poynings, Warninglid, Wineham. There are loads. Or do you want a larger village/town ?

C0NFUSEDIAM · 26/09/2025 08:06

Fulking not Filming

LIZS · 26/09/2025 08:10

Why can’t he take the train, much quicker , he’ll be a teen so not little and others will do same. Traffic in Brighton itself can be awful. If you want to be north of Brighton you can look along A23 at the villages around HH with stations.

Absentosaur · 03/10/2025 12:55

Surely Westminster in London is a better option?? Works for both of you. Bonkers Brighton Barking situation!
