BTEC diploma for students not in school

Does anyone know if it's possible to do a BTEC diploma when not in a school setting?
My daughter has an EOTAS package on her EHCP. Basically home tutoring and mentoring funded by LA.
Shes just finished GCSEs and really wants to do a level 3 qualification in criminology.
Criminology ALevel has been pulled and the only alternative is BTEC level 3 diploma in criminology by WJEC exam board.
We've got a tutor but we can't find any exam centre that accepts private candidates for BTECs.
Does anyone know if this is possible or have any ideas?

Does the tutor not work in partnership with a centre?

Kings Monkton in Cardiff used to have private candidates do the BTEC in conjunction with Highlight tuition. I don’t know if they still do. They have lots of experience with SEN.

With EOTAS, the LA is ultimately responsible.

Where in the country are you? DD did this at her sixth form college.

greywolfie · 23/09/2025 19:06

A'Level Criminology still exists. Funded till at least 2027

LIZS · 23/09/2025 19:10

But it is not a subject that directly leads anywhere. Why is she so set on it? You don’t need to study it at A level to take it at uni or find a legal job. The difficulty in setting this up may reflect that there are other more readily available options.

Sixth form college isn’t appropriate if the OP’s DD has EOTAS. In order to have EOTAS/EOTIS/C via an EHCP, it has to be inappropriate for provision to be made in a school or college.

OP’s DD would be able to do the BTEC if she was able to attend school/college. She should not be disadvantaged because she is disabled.

@greywolfie what exam board still does A level criminology?

RampantIvy · 23/09/2025 21:23

I can't find any exam board that still offers A level criminology. AQA, Edexcel and OCR don't. WJEC offers a level 3 Applied Certificate but it isn't an A level.
Pearson don't do a BTEC in criminology either.

hockeygrass · 23/09/2025 22:22

Yes it’s because the DfE would like to defund criminology due to the lack of career options. The Btec is hanging on for a couple more years.

It’s the equivalent of an A level though.

Yes, I realise that. I was just curious to see whether any exam board still did the A level, but none do.

No but like PP noted, a tutor could partner with a centre that offers it.

That previous poster was me!

I was just pointing out that attending a college isn’t appropriate. It isn’t as simple as finding a centre who offers it to their students on roll, because many centres don’t accept external candidates, even more so for non-GCSE/A-level qualifications. But the benefit is, centres don’t necessarily have to be local like they would if a young person attended a college.

greywolfie · 23/09/2025 22:58

My apologies- I was thinking of the wjec- which most colleges seen to be marketing as a 'regular' A'Level!

lanthanum · 24/09/2025 07:59

What's her longer term plan? The Open University offers Criminology, and does take under 18s, so that might be something to explore if she's sure that's the direction she wants to go, especially if OU might be a good choice for her in the longer term anyway. However if she might want to go to conventional uni, then A-levels or similar would be a better move.

flawlessflipper · 24/09/2025 09:59

While the OU offers some level 3 courses, I think their Criminology courses are level 4+ which wouldn’t be compatible with EOTAS/the EHCP.

Dutchhouse14 · 24/09/2025 20:20

Thank you all,
She can't go to college as its not a suitable environment atm, that's why she has EOTAS.
I couldn't find anywhere doing ALevel criminology this year, AQA used to do it but looks like it's been discontinued.
She's clever but has really struggled with anxiety, late diagnosis of autism.
Criminology has just really engaged her and I just want her to engage in education, she also loves art and is doing English lit and art a level.
She wants to go to uni so I wont that option for her even if atm her mental health issues may prevent it.
We are in Kent but would travel but Cardiff is a bit far! Although we have relatives in West Wales.
So may still look into highlight tuition.
Her tuition company don't do exam packages.

The person I knew who did it via Kings Monkton wasn’t that local to it. Although not as far as you. I think they only had to attend in person occasionally.
