how does everyone else survive the summer hols? DC are 6 and 4 ... so I need advice on how to survive the 24/7 slog and how to stop them getting fed up with one another too.... and how to avoid going mad with that 100th trip to such and such ... aarggh!!!

If you can afford it, use a Holiday club. Even just one morning a week gives you a bit of relief - and they enjoy the company of other children. Mine is £11 a morning.

Otherwise, try to have a few meet-ups planned - maybe before school breaks up, whilst you're still in contact with other mums.

Don't - mine are out in 3 weeks!

it's even worse here - DS1 asks if he can 'learn at home'... 8, 6 and 4 and one wants me to turn into a private tutor... what he thinks I'm going to do with his sisters is anyone's guess...

although - I'm working on a 'dear grandma, please can we come and stay for a week' letter as his first lesson...

Local churches often do holiday clubs for a week or so, which would amuse them for a few hours a day for a week - just to break it up a bit. There are also often sports camps, again for a few hours a day for a week or so.

I get my two to write a list of things they would love to do, things they quite fancy doing, things they could cope with without moaning too much; things to do that are free or v cheap; and things to do on a rainy day - and we try to do at least a few off each of their lists.

we do the list thing too - it works well. I'm a teacher so really love the hols (sorry)

janeite · 01/06/2008 21:59

Me too Yogabird - maybe that's where we get the list-itis from too!

I used to do the lists when they were younger. Going out for picnics with friends with DCs was an easy way to pass the day. I liked bike rides-anything that didn't cost money! At that age something simple like strawberry picking was easy. I loved the holidays! I miss it now they are older and don't want their Mum to do anything with them!

we do similar to what abbey says pack a picnic and go- anywhere (within reason) that they choose. go for a bike ride, visit nanny and grandads houses. mine absolutely love fruit picking- even if ds wont eat it he likes to pick it and cook things for me to eat!
i try and have one thing plnned (loosely) for each day that keeps them amused especially things if you cn drag them to last a couple of days i.e. going to collect leaves/twigs etc from woods one day- making pics with them the next etc etc

Ours make scrapbooks of what they have done each day throughout the holidays. They are gorgeous to look back at as they are full of photos and jokes and memories that would otherwise be lost.

This is my first summer hols 'without' the kids as I am back at work full time so DH will have to look after them all.

dylsmum1998 · 03/06/2008 09:30

those are a good idea- is your dh going to continue them, so then the children can show you what they have done each day?
