Help needed please. My daughter got below expected in year 2 and she started year 3. Is there any way I can help her home to reach the expected level for year 3. I spoke with teachers and they confirmed they will help, but I wanted to help her in home. Any books that will be helpful as well

@ForHardyCrab Is the school giving you an overview of the curriculum for this term? That would be very helpful. I think when dc are enthusiastic about other subjects such as history, geography and art etc you can widen reading topics and maths topics to help overall learning. Have a good meeting.

Thank you so much. I have never asked for curriculum , but it is worth a try to ask the teacher.

@ForHardyCrab Where I was a governor, each year group lead teacher put an outline curriculum on the web site. Just checked - they still do. It’s a small thing but can help parents with going to the library, maybe a trip out to see something relevant and hopefully getting dc excited about what they are learning.

Definitely do things in your daily life, get her to write you a shopping list, get her a little diary where she can write what she's done that day, even daft things like get her to plan a party for her teddies, writing a guest list, what supplies they might need, an itinerary with timings etc.

When reading before bed get her to do a paragraph and then you do one, get her to read instructions for things like Lego or board games, ask her to read signs when you're out and about. Do little treasure hunts around the house and write little clues for her to read.

For maths you can get her to help you plan for shopping, say things like "we need 2 pints of milk for each day and we need 5 days worth, how many pints do we need in total?" You can break it down more for her or use visual props, get her to help you count money, save her own pennies for things and work out how much she needs for a treat. Board games like Monopoly Junior or Game of life will help too.

We are in a similar situation, and working out how we can target help, so I’m taking some ideas off this thread!

For number bonds, I picked up a cheap copy of “shut the box” - that’s proved popular. I think the important thing for maths is to drill the basics over and over so they have that understanding. School have to move on before they’re ready, so do the practice at home.
