Missed GCSE predicted grades and failing English

Hi all, I need some advice please. My 16 year old son was predicted a mixture of 4-6 grades for GCSe. He had a sporting injury a week before exams which left him in agonising pain. He was also diagnosed with ADHD in May. As a result, he got 4 in maths, 5-4 in double science and the rest are between 1-3, including a 2 in English. We have managed to enrol him in a local college to resit English, business, sociology and citizenship GCSEs. Another option is to resit English and to do Btech level 2. Which option is better for his long term plans? He wants to study Quantity surveying at university long term. Thanks

I would encourage the btec 2 in business. Ditch a gcse in citizenship - not much point. Given his grades, btec 3s are more likely than A level for him so I would go down the btec route so he gets experience of the coursework and deadlines

Quantity surveying is something that there are degree apprenticeships available in, might be worth looking at that route and the qualifications needed to go that route instead of university?

Thank you Pippatpip! His college requires for him to do 4 GCSEs for a resit one year course including English or btech level 2 in business plus English resit. If he passes english, he will only have 4 GCSEs plus Btech. I worry it’s not enough for unis and apprenticeships? Thanks

Apprenticeships are super competitive. He needs 5 GCSEs at grades 4-5 plus grades 4-5 in English and maths. Thanks

With grades 4-6 pre accident I'd have been looking at a BTEC anyway.
So I would say do level 2 BTEC followed by Level 3.

But what are uni requirements for Quantity Surveying? You may need to work backwards from them.

Double Science counts as 2 GCSEs. So Double Science and maths is 3 GCSE passes. So if he passes English language and does a level 2 BTEC in Business next year that will give him 5 passes.
Now that he has his ADHD diagnosis, he needs to be assessed by the college to see if any access arrangements need to be put into place to help him through his exams next year.

As long as he has 5 gcses grade 4 including English and maths that's enough for most courses. The Btec business is equivalent to 2 gcses, so 4 gcses plus btec is 6 gcses. .

I would stick with Citizenship over other subjects if you need an extra GCSE.

DD did that one early in Y10 (dyslexic and ADHD) and got a really good grade without a huge amount of work.

It's pretty straightforward to learn and a nice mix of short and long questions compared with many subjects.
