Returning to teaching

I was a primary school teacher for over ten years. I left in 2022 and now work in a different career on a salary of 15k less (5 k less if I progress). I’m considering returning to teaching because of the pay, the holidays and the bond with the children. Am I being silly to consider this?

Don't return for the pay unless you love the job.
Have your reasons for leaving changed? If not then why go back? If they have then yes go back.

Not silly to think about it no, but the reasons you left are still there and you can't live the whole term desperate to get to the holidays each time. Can you afford to work part time? For me, that's how I cope with the stress of teaching, just not being there every day. And for me, it was better to take a .6 teaching job earning £26k than some admin/charity job for that salary but ft.

Why did you stop?

Why did you leave?

Bella8989 · 21/08/2025 07:51

I stopped because my last school was a school where I was expected to pick up a lot slack and due to high numbers of pupils with sen and no extra support.
in all honesty, I have worked in some horrific schools but when they school was right (management and competent staff) I loved teaching. I really did. If I’m honest with myself I was a really good teacher.
I know that a bad school can make the job unbearable.
Has it got harder?

Just a suggestion but you may want to post on the Staff Room thread as I think that’s more teacher-focused.

Thanks.
