St Paul’s Juniors

Hello

my son will be taking 7+ exam in November for St Paul’s Juniors

What’s the best way to help him prepare?
Also, I’d love to hear what kind of interview questions they typically ask.

My son loves maths and is a great reader, but writing is his weakness — he just doesn’t enjoy it. His teachers say he tends to rush through his writing, which affects the quality. If anyone has tips to help him slow down and focus more on structure and detail, I’d be really grateful.

He’s 6 years old, and his current school often comments on how mature he is for his age. He really enjoys his school now, but he’s open to moving if I tell him it will benefit him.

He’s also very sporty — he loves football but is happy to play most sports and really enjoys being active. But currently plays for a team.

Any tips, resources, or experiences would be truly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi ForRedAnt

I went to the Girl’s school and many years later now run an English Tuition business specialising in private school entrance prep. Here is my advice:

Use all the resources on the St Paul’s website. For example, this reading list for English. https://www.stpaulsschool.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/7-reading-suggestions-2024-1.pdf

Introduce him to dictation as this is the main literacy assessment.

They will observe candidates in group classroom/lesson scenarios.

I don’t think they hold formal interviews at this key stage.

Aged 10, I was put in for the SPGS entrance exam which did include a formal interview with the High Mistress. I remember being surrounded by lots of extremely well prepared girls. I had had no preparation and was just really enjoying a day out. One of the interview questions was

“Geppili, why do you want to come to school here?”

My honest and unprepared answer was:

”I just love all the crystal chandeliers in the Great Hall.” 🤣

I won a Bursary place. They want kids who demonstrate curiosity, love of learning and some area of excellence.

Hope this helps.

@Geppili Thanks for your response! I've received the reading list and have already purchased a couple of books from it for him to read during the summer break. Your honest answer at the interview just goes to show that it's always best to be yourself 😆 🤣

We'll start preparing for English dictation.
Thanks so much again! x
