Why did this Happen for Clearing?

On The University of Manchester’s website, why does it say that their Law programme is in clearing yet when I contacted their Law clearing team, the operator said that it never had been in clearing so I couldn’t apply?

Is this true or a mistake?

It was likely a mistake or outdated info on the website. If the Law team confirmed it was never in clearing, their info is accurate. Sites can sometimes show old or generic listings best to trust direct confirmation.

But I asked this question on TSR also. And someone responded that even on 7th July (over two weeks ago), this was the case for them. They phoned and were told it wasn’t in clearing yet is showed as though it was. Have they not updated for weeks?

The website very clearly says that the course may be in clearing for people who already have their exam results, meet the offer requirements and are not holding an offer from a university or college. Even then, it’s not a definite, it just asks you to contact the admissions team. From memory of the several threads that you have posted recently, you don’t meet all of those requirements.

It might be for overseas candidates.

You can’t apply anyway until results day, assuming it is appears in Clearing.

You can if you already have your results in hand and you don’t have another offer already.

Op has taken A level resits this year and holds offers in ucas. Last year’s results would not meet the contextual grades.

How do they know what's in clearing until the A level results?

Apologies, I thought you were making a general comment about courses in clearing, rather than the OP’s specific situation. Yes I absolutely agree that last year‘s results are not sufficiently good for her to have been offered a place on the Manchester law degree. Also, she does have several other offers already.

Sweetheart, please read the replies to your previous posts and take them on board.

Sometimes courses are in clearing for international students only.

But as others have said, even if this is in clearing for UK students you only have BBB which doesn't meet the requirements and in any event you would have to reject your other offers in order to take it.

User76745333 · 24/07/2025 15:57

The clearing page for Manchester literally says you need A*AA or AAB if contextual. It also says you can't be holding offers from anywhere else.

It also has a subject requirement:

  • Applicants must be studying at least one of the following A Level subjects: Law; Accounting; Economics; Finance; Business Studies; Development Studies; Government and Politics; Economic and Social History; Mathematics; Anthropology; Sociology; Philosophy; Religious Studies; English Language; English Literature; Geography; Psychology; Classical Civilisation; History; Archaeology; Communication Studies; Environmental Studies; World Development; Biology; Chemistry; Physics; Modern Languages.

To be fair, some universities will give conditional offers through clearing. My DD worked clearing for her university up until last year. Their system allowed them to send conditional offers to students as long as they were receiving their level 3 grades by a-level results day and already had the required GCSEs.

The website is a tad unclear OP, however your best bet is to hold tight until results day.

Yes, but to get those offers youneed to not be holding any other offers, don’t you? From memory, the OP has the offer of a foundation place at Cambridge and on one of her other threads was also talking about commuting from Manchester to UCL in some hair-brained idea so all of that would have to be declined in order to enter any clearing process at this point.

Clearing opens in July.
We have a pretty good idea what our numbers will look like based on the offers we’ve made, offers accepted and trends from previous years.
Obviously the busiest day is A level results day but those aren’t the only students looking for a place.

I’m scared all the places will be gone by then.

OP you have been advised on your other thread to accept the place on the foundation year at Cambridge. I agree with those posters that this would be the best idea for you. It would give you a chance to mature and gain some acceptance of how well you have done to gain this offer. Cambridge is a lovely city and if it’s prestige you are seeking (as I recall) then you cannot get better tbh. Do the F year and hopefully you will do well and realise that Cambs is a great place to take your full degree.

I really think that would be better than randomly chasing after a clearing place in Manchester when you have the solid, confirmed chance of somewhere so excellent.

If they say they have no places anyway and you don't yet meet the grades you have nothing to apply for. This might change on Results Day but probably not. You need to wait or accept the foundation place. Did you list them on ucas previously?

My DC meets these requirements and they still said that there were no spaces in clearing. It's incorrect on their website, and has been for a good few weeks, even though they've been alerted to it. Pretty shoddy really.
