Advice on Academic Appeal process

Hello, my son needs to make an Academic Appeal for 3 failed modules in his final year of University, which have put his degree in peril. He had an undiagnosed condition which caused his performance to deteriorate significantly this year under the added pressures of final year studies. We have a medical report from highly respected NHS physician, and a supporting letter from a therapist in the area. We need to convince the Uni board why he didn't claim Extenuating Circumstances for his condition throughout the year. It was undiagnosed so he was unaware of it. It was only when he got home from Uni 2 weeks ago that I swung into action and fast tracked an assessment for him, after seeing the state he was in. Any guidance would be appreciated on how to navigate the appeals process, including using an education lawyer. Thank you

Just to put your mind at rest, in my university we never looked at appeals from our own departments, so the students had no history with the staff considering their case.

I am sorry to hear about the hard time you had as it must have been awful. Thank you for the supportive post. Son has drafted the personal statement and it addresses the key issue of why he didn't open up to difficulties. We have secured supportive evidence of the many barriers that young adults face obtaining an ADHD diagnosis, with the impairment of executive function a key reason why people don't recognise their symptoms as neurodiverse in origin. Instead they blame inadequacies. Son has now started medication and I can already seen a difference in his focus, planning and organisation function. We are hopeful of a fair hearing.

Update: Son got his results today and he was bumped up to a Degree ( Pass ) so he can graduate!. Previously was only Diploma. A "technicality" was cited. We are proceeding with the appeal for two failed modules - if he passes the resits on this he will get Honours. Boy has started treatment, and will have disability mitigations in place for the resits so we are in a better place today to shoot for a 2:2. Proud of my boy for pushing and being determined to get through.

UPDATE: My son won his academic appeal and will resit his failed exams this month, without penalty and with support mitigations in place. Very pleased he is getting another shot.
