Which of these two pieces of writing is more close to the expected by the end of reception? Is one really far behind or one really far ahead?

I would say the owl one is ahead.

Impossible to say unless you know how much support they had and generally impossible because it's just one piece of writing. "Sleeping" is great spelling for end of reception, but perfectly normal if an adult supported them to segment it. "Orit" for, I'd guess, orange, could indicate a speech or hearing issue, or it could be a sign that they don't like writing and get bored before they've finished the word! Handwriting on the left is way ahead and on the right is behind, but maybe it was a bad day.

Agree with PP, owl text is more advanced, good grasp of phonics, use of two verbs and an adjective. Letter formation, size and spacing of handwriting is also better, but depends on level of support.

StretchMarx · 08/06/2025 19:15

By the end of reception they're supposed to be able to write a sentence that's legible to others, with most letters formed correctly, and using their phonics knowledge to spell.

So the owl one is massively ahead of that and the fox one is not quite there yet!

I think the owl one is ahead and the fox one a little behind so “expected” would be somewhere in the middle. The fox one is certainly not massively concerning though, at least they have formed letters mostly legibly and the sentence makes sense

mynameiscalypso · 08/06/2025 20:51

The owl one looks ahead - the letter formation and the use of punctuation (albeit incorrectly) is certainly beyond what DS was taught in Reception.

CluelessBereavement · 08/06/2025 21:20

Fox one looks like it was independent. So correct use of capital letters and full stops.

Owl one has 'The' written for them to start the sentence so not independent and no capital for second sentence.

Both have used a colour for an adjective.
Both legible.
Both phonetically plausible.

Fox is Meeting Expectations.
Owl I don't think is independent (because of the 'The') so couldn't say for sure.

Thanks all for the replies, pretty much what I thought. Sounds like some different views on whether the fox one is meeting expected yet, so perhaps it's nearly there but not as concerning as comparing it to the owl one would immediately suggest as consensus is that's ahead / with help. I don't know if it was or wasn't with help but the fox one was definitely independent.
