How do people withdraw from university?

What's the process for a student to drop out of a certain university once they get an offer from a different one?

Imagine if someone was at Manchester University then reapplied to, say, Bristol University while at Manchester and they get an offer. How are they supposed to withdraw from Manchester? Will Manchester (i.e. the original university) make a massive deal about it and make it a very long-drawn process or would they not care?

They would contact their personal tutor or programme leader or similar and ask for a withdrawal form to complete. Original uni won't care that much - it's quite common for students to move around. I doubt it would be a big deal.

No big deal
it happens all the time

Contact the school admin. Happens all the time.

I work in Course admin and submit withdrawals for UG students where I work- if a student contacted us in this situation stating they wished to withdraw, I would advise them to have a chat with their personal tutor about their decision and also recommend they chat to the funding advice team about their entitlement to ensure they will be able to access the finance they need to fund full duration of the new course and make sure they are aware of their liability for tuition fees for the current course, which varies depending on the point in the academic year they withdraw. If they then came back confirming they wish to go ahead, I would withdraw them via our records system without any further ado. I know some staff won’t give any advice though and just withdraw them straightaway. I just like to encourage them not to make any rash decisions as we can’t reinstate them easily once withdrawn. Different unis will have different processes and some may have forms to complete and get signed off by programme directors of other staff both as a means to gather data on why people withdraw so they can identify any issues and also discourage rash decisions and offer individual support if required. However, at the end of the day it’s entirely the student’s choice so shouldn’t be a massive deal

No big deal, happens a lot and is quick to sort. There will be a form of some sort, probably best to ask their personal tutor.

It happens but not particularly common. I've known a few that have done a transfer, although in one case it was a medical reason for needing to move back home, and both unis made it as easy as possible for them.

However please don't go off to uni with the attitude you're going to reapply and get to Oxford and then move. Because you will then struggle to settle (because in your head you will not be there long) and find it hard to join in, so it will become a self-fulfilling situation where you think you won't enjoy it.

Go and enjoy where you have been offered, without looking over your shoulder the whole time. Most people, however disappointed they were not to get into their first choice, say afterwards that they are glad they didn't because then they wouldn't have gone to that one and it was the best place for them.
Those that aren't saying that ime haven't enjoyed it because they still are upset about not getting into their first choice.

Do you realise that Oxbridge will not accept an application from someone at another university? Just knocking that one on the head given some of your other threads.

Pick a university you think will make you an offer and where you will be happy. Don't keep re-hashing previous scenarios.

You can’t apply via UCAS while attending another uni. You need to withdraw first and there may be funding implications. I’ve a feeling this was discussed recently.

AutumnLeaves91 · 23/05/2025 15:27

Are they a current student at the uni, or sixth form who’s accepted a place but changed their mind? Are they fully enrolled, basically?

How are your private A level resits going, OP?
