Funding cut for media studies Higher Education

Posting this here, rather than in the HE forum, because it's relevant to students choosing A Levels as well as HE courses.

As expected, the Office for Students is reducing funding for Media Studies and Journalism courses, because there is an oversupply of those graduates compared to what is needed by the job market. They are re-directing the money to courses in strategic sectors, such as lab-based courses and courses in nursing and midwifery where more graduates are needed. There's an article in today's Financial Times, but it's behind a paywall: "Funding for ‘high-cost’ university courses to be cut in England"

Here is the OfS announcement that triggered the news item: https://www.officeforstudents.org.uk/news-blog-and-events/press-and-media/ofs-receives-funding-guidance-for-2025-26/

OfS receives funding guidance for 2025-26 - Office for Students

The Office for Students (OfS) has received guidance from the government which sets out the Strategic Priorities Grant funding available for distribution in 2025-26.

They only gave us £130 per Media Studies student to be fair - not a game changing amount to come off Media or go to Physics. And the total funding to be allocated is £106m LESS than last year.
