Solihull School vs Edgbaston High for Girls

Hello everyone. We are relocating to Solihull and looking at school options for our girls. There don’t seem to be many options but are currently pursuing Solihull School and Edgbaston High School for Girls. I just wanted to ask if anyone had any experience of these two schools and what your sentiments are?

we have looked in King Edward’s High School for Girls too but feel it may not be the right environment for them. Many thanks in advance

I'm sorry nobody has replied. I don't know anything about Solihull School but know someone just doing their A-levels at EHS who has loved her time there. I also know someone whose DD is starting Y7 at EHS in September who rejected KEHS in favour of EHS.

EHS is excellent pastorally. Less academic than Solihull and (obviously) KEHS but a nice place to be and gets the best out of girls. I know a lot of people with girls there and all very happy. Some people choose it over KEHS for these reasons. Solihull is bigger, sporty, obviously co-ed. It’s some way away from EHS so a lot will depend on where you’re planning to live. You can commute to Solihull from Edgbaston and vice versa but it’ll need a bit more time and planning. HTH

I don’t know these schools well, but agree with the pp about the distance between the two. I think the journey to EHS would be terrible from Solihull. You might want to look at Kings High in Warwick or Arnold Lodge or The Kingsley School (both in Leamington) as both Warwick and Leamington are a fairly easy train journey from Solihull, Dorridge and Knowle.

Kings Warwick is a good shout. It is obviously all girls and probably more the EHS model if that’s what you’re after. Definitely more accessible if you’re in Solihull. It has not long moved to a new site too I think and I understand is on the up generally. Someone more local may know more

Thanks for sharing! I hadn’t looked into Kings School but will do so now. You are right about the traffic and accessibility point and it seems like a great school too..

Thank you SO much for sharing and your insights! Definitely not looking forward to the potential journey from Solihull to Edgbaston so will definitely look into the schools you’ve suggested

I commuted from Solihull to KEHS for 7 years! We all survived. All my observations on the schools would be very outdated. I think being sure you can cope with super academic school has always been and remains a very valid base point.

If you like EHS, check if they offer mini bus transport to and from Solihull.

That's interesting to hear that someone refused KEHS, in favour of EHS. What were their reasons?

I recently heard the same from another person, as their child was interested in the performing arts.

I had always heard that KEHS was tough to get in etc, back when we used to live in Solihull some years ago. Not sure if things have changed recently.

OP,
as other posters have said, it's a long commute from Solihull to any of the Birmingham schools. So, do consider that. I have heard that Solihull school has improved a lot recently.

LetItGoToRuin · 16/05/2025 15:18

@houseRefurb I believe their DD fell in love with EHS and it is also a short walk from where they live. They felt she would do well at either school.

My niece is doing the same. Her sister is at KEHS but she preferred EHS.

EHS offer bigger scholarships that KEHS.

OP - if you have no major preference between the two schools I would avoid the commute. There will be buses but if your dd is staying late for some reason she may need to get two buses or trains to get home.

Indeed, Sis was pleased when Niece 2 opted for it. 30% off is not to be sniffed at.
