Accident at school - should we be informed?

My 6 year old dd came home from shcool with a burn on her arm caused by a glue gun left lying out. It was quite red and blistered by time she showed me. She did not get sent to the school nurse.I feel I should have been informed by the school not by my dd. Am I being unreasonable to expect some notification from the school? Wondering how to politely tackle this with teacher/school.

The shool are responsible for your child. They should have informed you and also filled in an accident repirt whereboth the teacher and parent should sign. If not you can ask an ofsted inspector to come into school and chech procedures. i hope this helps

I would be outraged and I'm a teacher. I would ring the school on Monday and ask for an appointment to see the teacher (or catch her in the morning and ask to see her after school). I would then ask her what happened and if any treatment had been given and ask why you weren't informed. The school should have informed you straight away. That is just bad and negligent practice.

I'm horrified! My 6yr old ds is so clumsy that the teachers joke about the number of trips he has to the first aid room. We always get a standard 'injury letter' bumped head/knee whatever. The odd time he's had a really bad bump on forehead which is still visible when he comes home, there's always a more detailed explanation on the letter. For something like a burn I think I'd expect an immdediate phone call, or to be spoken to by teacher at home time

Thanks for all your comments which have been extremely helpful. I no longer feel like a neurotic mother. I will take it up with he teacher tomorrow.

Let us know what they say!

did your child tell the teacher she'd been burned? maybe the teacher didn't know.

I was about to say the same thing branflake81... did your dd tell the teacher?

My dd is always coming home with notes. I think it's a bit OTT to be honest, she just has a tendancy to bump into things and get upset. ds also has his share of bumps, but then generally gets on with things unless it is a bad bump (even then it takes quite a bit to stop him from doing whatever he was doing). So some kids will be more likely to go to the teacher about their minor injuries than others, and therefore get a note generated. The other thing is that burns can be minor at the time but then generate blisters etc some time afterwards, so it may not have been a big deal at the time. I'd still be talking to the teacher about it though. Glue guns should be supervised.
