ProssecoParent · 25/04/2025 09:20

could someone please let me know if my daughters will be in the same year, my first was born 16th October 2022 and the second 17th February 2024, I feel like I’ve confused myself now from trying to work it out

No they won't. Your first will be one of the oldest in her year, your second will be in the year below.

Dragonsandcats · 25/04/2025 09:22

No they won’t be. One will start sept 27 and the other in sept 28 (in England)

WimpoleHat · 25/04/2025 09:22

No. Your older DD will be in a class with kids born between September 2022 and August 2023. Your younger daughter will be in the year below.

Stef92 · 25/04/2025 09:22

No they wouldn’t be. There’d be one school year between them. Sept 22-Aug23, sept23-aug24 would be the age range for the years

Karrotten · 25/04/2025 09:23

No. A new school year starts every September so to be in the same year your youngest would of had to be born before September 2023

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 25/04/2025 09:23

No. The eldest starts school sept 2027
the youngest starts school sept 2028

Iloveeverycat · 25/04/2025 09:28

They will go to school the September after they are 4

DappledThings · 25/04/2025 09:31

Your second would need to have been born by 31 August 2023 to be in the same year.

crumblingschools · 25/04/2025 09:32

I guess it might depend which country you are in, where there can be more flexibility around admission age, but in England they would be in different years

Fifthtimelucky · 25/04/2025 09:53

I know someone whose children were in the same year at school. One was born in September so was one of the oldest in her year. The other was born the following August and was one of the youngest!

JaninaDuszejko · 25/04/2025 09:58

Where do you live? That will make a difference to theur school years.

However, there is 16 months between them so it would be unlikely unless there was, e.g. a January cut off and you were able to held back your older child so they could start with the year below.

BunnyRuddington · 25/04/2025 10:09

Agree it depends entirely where you live but if you’re in England they should be in different years.

LIZS · 25/04/2025 10:22

No in subsequent years.

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/04/2025 10:32

The only place it might happen is at a private school.

I'm trying to work out from what I know of the system, whether an addition to that might be, or possibly in Scotland?

No they won't be. You start school the year that you are 4 on the 1st September. So the oldest one will turn 4 on the 16th October 2026, starting school in September 2027. Your younger one will turn 4 on the 17th Feb 2028 start school in September 2028. So there will be one year between them.

It would be possible in Scotland, but you'd have to do it on purpose, by choosing to defer DC1 and then choosing not to defer DC2.

BarnacleBeasley · 25/04/2025 14:47

(just to add: the norm in my part of Scotland would be to do the opposite, so you'd send Oct-born DC1 in the correct year, and defer Feb-born DC2, and they'd be two school years apart).

ProssecoParent · 25/04/2025 14:49

Ah thanks so much guys makes sense now. I did originally think they’d be a year apart in school but I’m super sleep deprived today and for some reason thought they were gonna be in the same year but than started to second guess myself. Also thought today was Thursday lol! I need to sleep

There’s over a year and 4 months between then, why would you think they could be in the same year?

I’m sleep deprived just got a bit confused today that’s all

ProssecoParent · 25/04/2025 14:54

Also my reason for thinking this way was because my eldest would be turning 5 in the same year as my youngest turning 4

Ah, I thought so, from occasional forays onto Scotsnet (the more um, anarchic posters there provided a source of much entertainment and fellow-feeling back in the lockdown era) but the Scottish Government info I found just now seemed slightly confusing re who could defer, I have to say.

BarnacleBeasley · 25/04/2025 15:04

@MarchingFrogs you've always been able to defer children who are not yet 4 when school starts in August, but it's only the last couple of years when you could still automatically get your funded childcare hours for August-December birthdays. Previously it was only Jan and Feb birthdays as they'd be the youngest in the year, and the others you had to make a case for it.
